There are moments that the words don’t reach There is suffering too terrible to name You hold your child as tight as you can And push away the unimaginable The moments when you’re in so deep It feels easier to just swim down

June 12 ; 7pm

Tensions were still running high enough that Reese should have been avoiding Jacks since the news that he had once been in TU had come to light, but it was where he lived, currently where he worked, and he was starting to run out of restaurants to explore and bars to frequent. So here he was, nestled on the outskirts of Evesdown (foolishly) in a booth with two guys from the construction site who had allowed him to have another shot at proving that he wasn't a raging genophobe.

That was the idea anyway. The two guys had left after two drinks and dinner. Both evos, they could walk around Evesdown without looking over their shoulder, and so they'd offered to walk Reese home, since they knew he couldn't call a taxi.

Instead, Reese had shaken his head, waved them off, and assured them he'd see them around another day. (Not at work; he was on forced, indefinite leave from Marshall Construction, the company that had made his family one of the wealthiest in Ark. He'd been fired from his previous job after being in the hospital for too long for his position to remain reserved.) Someone might have pitied him if he hadn't done it to himself, but it was where he remained -- a constant state of self-inflicted suffering that still brewed in this moment as it did in every other.

He was at the bar getting his sixth drink when he overheard someone say the words: "You know they'll pass it. Typics are all the same."

Reese turned his head, hesitated, caught himself before he spoke.

The person's friend agreed, "You know, if one of us had been killed, it wouldn't even have made the news."

There were good ideas, and then there were 97% of the ideas that Reese Wallace Marshall had. His right hand clapped onto the first's shoulders. "I agree. The law's a bunch of bullshit." he offered. "But there's something to be said for figuring out how the fuck to get dangerous people off the street. I'm not saying--"

He was cut off with someone saying "tangerine" and another shouting "raptor". In some strange way, Reese found these words comforting -- no one recognized him. A qualified success.

"Don't call me fuckin' names." he said quietly. "Just trying to say -- we don't do something; people start dying and then--"

"Few typics die, who cares?" some drunkard laughed a few stools down.

Like a snake's hood expanding as it hiss, Reese's eyes narrowed and the hand on the guy's shoulder who had spoken, turned him until his back hit the table. "Say it. Again. I fuckin' dare you."

Laughter broke out; and Reese fumed like a stoking fire, fist clenching and unclenching.

Lenox has the ability to manipulate alcohol, both on a molecular level and kinetically. This means fancy bar tricks for one thing, but the flipside is that she can increase and decrease blood alcohol levels, and intoxication/sobriety levels in others if they have alcohol in their system. She can cause them to black-out drunk, and likewise ‘wake’ someone up who is in that state with a sobering effect. Suppressant modifies her abilities so that she needs to be touching someone skin to skin in order to effect them.

If she was being honest, Len didn't mind being stood up by her cousin. Luukas had sent her a short and to the point 'change of plans, raincheck' about ten minutes ago, by which time she had already been ensconced in a booth for forty-five minutes waiting for him. Generally speaking, she could count on Luukas to have good reasons for the things he did, up to and including blowing her off.

Now she was taking her time over a drink, and weighing up her options for the rest of the night and whether or not she actually cared to see if anyone worthwhile was free and willing to come meet her. It was helpful that she liked her own company, that she didn't need anyone else to be with her in order feel at ease. And there was enough entertainment to be had by people watching, which she was doing in that very moment while absently flicking one dark purple fingernail back and forward against the gunmetal buckle on the collar of her well-worn leather jacket. If it hadn't been for the obnoxious drinking music and the general hubbub of the punters in the bar, she'd have heard the distinctive click of her acrylics on the metal.

There wasn't much unusual going on that she could see. Mostly your usual mixture of evos at varying degrees of drunkenness, mostly off the cheapest swill possible since this wasn't the kind of joint that got fancy about its liquid refreshment. Not that she was passing judgment. She'd settled for a harsh whiskey of the throat burning variety. She sipped it again now and cast a second look over the room.

Lenox drew a second look every now and then herself, she knew, though she had mastered a dead-eyed stare that she could switch on-and-off at will that served as a deterrent to most. She'd finish her drink and then go, Lenox decided, looking down at her empty glass and immediately amending that decision to include getting herself a fresh drink first. She slid smoothly out of the booth, not intending to come back to it. She could just as easily have another drink at the bar now that she knew Luukas wasn't coming.

As she reached the bar a conversation caught her attention in a somewhat peripheral way. It was always a timing thing, she'd discovered, when things went down in Jacks. It wasn't currently worrying enough to stop her from ordering a drink though, so she had a fresh glass in her hand when the escalation came.

Few typics die, who cares?

Say it. Again. I fuckin' dare you.

Lenox's attention zeroed in a little closer. The one she didn't know, the other though.... She sized him up, took in the tension, the fist, the alcoholic reek that had very little to do with actual smell that Len could almost feel in the back of her throat.

"Good choice." She told him casually, her voice cutting through the laughter.

Reese was good with voices and faces. He had been groomed to be a lawyer and business man, even if his parents had let him believe that he had had the option of doing whatever job he so desired. Regardless, whether he recognized someone or not (sometimes he preferred to pretend he didn't know a person because it helped keep emotional distance), he knew this one.

The voice took a moment to place; but as soon as he saw her he knew her. The woman who worked at On the Rocks, who had handed him beer across the counter for probably longer than either of them cared to admit.

Reese wasn't a talkative drunk, but he went to the bar to watch the news some days; he went there to watch games when there were games. On the Rocks had been his favorite place until they'd not-so-inappropriately asked him to stop swinging by -- for exactly the reason that she was trying to distract him from now.

His fist was already in the air and the Evo (one would presume) who was on his back about to get his nose broken had his eyes closed and was visibly waiting for the impact as he glowed a vibrant magenta from every inch of his skin. Tier 5; - Bio-luminescence.

Reese's fist stayed where it was as he tried to organize his drunken mind from sloshing about into words. (It was a surprisingly difficult task for someone who had literally just been speaking not more than a few seconds before.)

"Fuck." he said quietly. "Am I seeing things?" he asked like a dog who was caught with his snout in the treat bag and slowly started to back away, and then a deeper concern crossed his face. "Or -- where am I?"

It was a question that Reese asked far more frequently than he would have admitted. He often lost track of where he was and what year it was when he was hammered. Despite talking to Len, he was still pinning the guy down, which was making his friends more and more anxious. None of the other evos spoke, but flames had appeared in one of their hands.

Reese hadn't noticed.

Lenox had.

Part of her kiiiiind of wanted to see what would happen. Especially with Fire Hands over there deciding that lighting up in a bar was a fantastic idea. But even the part of her that was morbidly curious in that oh-look-a-trainwreck kind of way was more about these things being at a distance from her. Right now this was not the case; inadvertently, for reasons of wanting another drink, she'd wound up in the thick of things.

The tableau was beginning to catch the attention of several others now; nobody around these parts would turn their nose up at entertainment that was free after all. Len sipped her whiskey and her eyes cut back to Fire Hands and the bulky friend now swaggering at his side. She was, at this point, leaning casually back against the bar, apparently relaxed but then everything behind the long slab of wood was essentially ammunition to her, whether anyone else was aware of it or not. It paid to be prepared for an easy escape from situations like this after all.

And it was question time now, apparently. Which was fine, and probably smarter than the whole insult, grab, snarl, and punch thing that had been the guts of this exchange so far. The first question had her raise an eyebrow. Was he seeing things? Probably, she reasoned. There was any number of things that might have drawn a question like that, and any number of answers she could give. Drunks saw things all the time for one, and for another, that one guy there was glowing pink, which counted as a thing to see in her mind. If she was supposed to pick and choose which question of his to answer - which the 'or' suggested, then she was going for the second one.

"Where are you? In the ass end of trouble, it seems like. But its a good choice, as I said, if your goal was to flaunt that deathwish you're wearing. Everyone's noticed, and they're all really impressed." And sip.

Another question, from one of the evos this time, demanding to know if she was with him. Lenox shrugged and looked at the grip that Deathwish still had on Mr Magenta.

"I'm with myself." Which was still the best company to be had in this place, by the way, nobody had convinced her otherwise in the past few minutes.

@Reese Marshall Yay! Me too!
