There are moments that the words don’t reach There is suffering too terrible to name You hold your child as tight as you can And push away the unimaginable The moments when you’re in so deep It feels easier to just swim down

Reese's eyes were glued on their hands, only because that seemed much safer to look at than Bruce's face. His voice was quiet when he spoke again. Just like before, now that he had calmed down, everything sounded detached and practiced.

But as practiced as he was, his eyes were still red from when he'd nearly lost control and salty tears had stung his eyes.

Silently, he noted the way that Bruce use his finger to make sure that he wasn't cutting off circulation and he let out a low chuckle. He didn't put it together entirely, but he did find it funny that the man was dressed the way he was and was using techniques that Reese had read online to make sure that he didn't hurt his girlfriend when they were having a little more wild a time than usual.

"Yeah?" he asked when Bruce offered him absolution. There was nothing that followed the statement that said that Reese was listening or that Reese was following this request. Perhaps, it was another way to punish himself or to try to push Bruce away. He said nothing for a little while longer, though he shifted slightly on the toilet's lid.

"You've got your head up your ass if you think people really have your back." He had told Bruce about his nightmares of people accusing him (and worse accepting whole sale) of killing his family, and if he asked, Reese would admit that he still had them even now. People he'd known from childhood had stopped talking to him based on rumors and accusations. Another supposed friend about a year after the accident asked how much he'd had to pay the truck driver. (It almost went without saying that Reese had spent a night in jail for assault, but that the other guy had dropped charges when Reese said he wasn't going to rat him out.)

Finally, he looked up, relending by saying: "But... for what it's worth, I don't. I mean -- you do have a fucking harem in there, but only on request." In an attempt to be friendly, to patch back up a good thing that he was sure he was going to rip apart in the next few months, he reached out with his free hand to clap his shoulder before his hand moved away again.

Then his eyes dropped again and his body language closed and locked the shudders again as he let in a deep breath and slowly let it back out.

Bruce found nothing surprising in the other man’s disagreement. Reese had significantly different life experience than he did, both in terms of the loss and then his manner of coping. The other man pushed people away, as he’d tried to do with Bruce earlier, and that led to all manner of warped perspective.

“People can surprise you if you give them the opportunity,” Bruce replied while continuing to wrap the other man’s bandage. Nobody could accuse him of sunny optimism untethered from reality; he considered himself a realist, something people around him often considered confounding given his profession. Though he believed it necessary for his profession. How could he help others free themselves if his feet weren’t planted firmly on the ground to draw them back safely?

In light of that, he knew better than most the darkness that danced around the edges of people’s souls, their deepest, often frightening, desires. That didn’t make them inherently untrustworthy, disloyal, or cruel. And he’d had the benefit of growing up in a loving family: supportive, openly affectionate, ever reliable. They formed his core experiences, and he took those lessons with him everywhere. The friends he’d chosen – not his acquaintances through high society but his real friends – wouldn’t turn on him because of rumors, and, in return, he would never give them reason to regret their loyalty.

Bruce turned to gaze steadily into the other man’s eyes as Reese continued. He nodded a single time in acknowledgment that they’d reached an accord. That he assumed Reese wouldn’t make further accusations in anger or when confused, and they wouldn’t have a repeat of their exchange in the other room. Then his expression lightened, and his lips curled into a smile from both the second statement and the touch to his shoulder. “Strangely, I was never one for the harem fantasies.”

That was what made that particular rumor baffling as well as offensive, though he knew it was projection.

“Flex your fingers for me,” he instructed. “If it’s too tight, I’ll redo it. Otherwise, we can finish cleaning up, and you can finish getting dressed.”

They still had a rave to attend.

Silently. Reese watched the way that Bruce carefully wrapped his hand. He couldn't help but be reminded of getting a scrape on the playground and his father coming to the rescue, or kicking a door and feeling his brother's careful fingers try to assess the damages.

Carefully he tucked the memories back where they belonged and tried to ignore the similarities. This was all fucking confusing. He couldn't have a new friend. That wasn't allowed. He made a mental note to intentionally avoid Bruce for as long as possible after the night was through.

It was safer that way.

Regardless, he had already been enough of an asshole tonight that he couldn't convince himself to keep going, especially when he was being so infuriatingly nice about it. Bruce hadn't even raised his fucking voice when Reese had threatened him and pulled out shit about his powers.

At the request, he wiggled his fingers and then clenched his fist to test the bandage. "I always thought harems and daddies kind of ran in the same crowd." he offered with a little shrug. "You've definitely got the second one down pat." He looked up and put on the most innocently coy expression he could manage; gentle mockery with no real malice.

But he drew his hand away from Bruce's and got back into his feet, expression dropping back to the placid one. Immediately, his hands tucked into his pockets and he turned away. "Yeah, alright." he agreed. "Uhm -- Thanks. This turned out a lot better than when I wrap it myself." As if he bloodied his knuckles often, which he did.

Bruce watched attentively as Reese first wiggled his fingers and then formed a fist to test the bandage and the pain in his hand. When the other man didn’t wince in pain or find his fingers immobile, he set about gathering the supplies and moving them to the side of the bathroom. They had to procure a vacuum or a broom and dustpan to get the shards of glass, and his mind already traveled down the path of clean up. Running Shangri-La for all these years allowed him to handle crises and speed bumps on autopilot, shifting easily between roles.

“They’re quite distinct, actually,” Bruce remarked, slipping now into expertise. More than a decade and a half of catering to other people’s fantasies taught him to distinguish between each shade, each flavor despite surface similarities. So that he could match people properly based on the underpinnings of their desires. “People with harem fantasies, they want to be catered to by multiple people, but it’s about virility and ego-stroking and…not laziness but reciprocity isn’t much of a concern. Daddies…”

He folded up the remaining gauze and pushed away from the sink. “Daddies offer firm correction, but their boys and girls are always front and center in their minds.”

He straightened and dusted his hands together before turning a smile on the other man. “But that’s enough shop talk for tonight.” His tone turned gentle, his expression softened, as he added, “You’re welcome. Let’s go finish up.”

Then they could catch the SkyRail and meet up with Larissa. Considering how big a night this was for her, she might not even notice his absence yet.

Reese's eyes were lowered the entire explanation, only daring to glance up now and again. He didn't toss a joke at the explanation, taking it instead at face value. He supposed that made sense. If Bruce was going to be anything in a world of chains and leather, Reese couldn't see him just basking in being pampered.

"I'll clean up in here." he muttered, grabbing a broom and dust pan from a closet whose door looked as if it might break in half at any moment. "Why don't you, uh -- You were almost done with the trunk right?" It was quiet as if he was expecting Bruce to yell at him or scold him. Maybe that was what he wanted; someone to affirm that he was as bad as he thought he was.

"I must have asked this before -- but what's your favorite drink? I'll get you one at Noc." he offered. Maybe, a little intoxicated, Bruce would be able to stand him for the entire night. He noted silently how selfish the thought was, but whether he yet understood why or not, he trusted the mental manipulator. Saturday couldn't happen again. If it had truly been his own mind craving the touch of some stranger, it was a looming threat -- like every other symptom of his self imposed torture.

He kneeled down to start sweeping up the shards that littered the floor of the bathroom.

Bruce had never been one to bask in being pampered and call it a day, not in his professional life or in his personal one. Were he, then he might have stepped back from his duties at Shangri-La the moment his checking account became self-sustaining, turning duties over to a middle-manager who could handle day-to-day operations while he seduced men and women alike to join the rumored harem. Far more hands-on, with a nurturing streak a mile wild and a domineering one of similar dimensions, he oversaw everything at Shangri-La from induction and decompression to the shift schedule to the holiday decorations. And in the personal sphere, he was much the same. A woman, man, or non-binary person could do worse than to have him as their Daddy or their Dominant.

“I was about half-finished,” Bruce corrected, though he straightened and crossed to the door, prepared to resume that task while Reese cleaned up the glass the blood. Unwilling to argue with the other man over who took care of it. Since Reese didn't loo at him, he didn't stare at the other man; they'd passed the point of lectures and or reprimands, had returned to tentative cooperation and the spirit of friendship in which Bruce had arrived.

He lingered in the doorway when he heard Reese clear his throat. When the question followed, he admitted, “I planned to order a John Collins when I walked through the door. Not his brother; I’m a bit particular.”

In more ways than one.

“I’ll see you in the bedroom when you finish up here,” he promised, before slipping out the door. With that, he promised that they would put this horrible interlude behind them so they could enjoy the rest of the evening and everything it had in store for them.

Reese nodded. "Yeah. Alright." He agreed, starting to clean up the mess in the bathroom as Bruce went back into the other room. He was making a mental list of things that he should have said or done to try to make this right. If he had rejected the invitation would that have helped? Honestly, at this point, he had no idea.

Again, the house was eerily silent aside from the whirring of the vacuum when Reese turned it on. The sounds of glass getting pulled up the tube felt like a punch in the gut to Reese. He'd been doing so fucking good, especially around other people.

The trunk seemed full of random items that seemed like they had no significance. Toys from fast food restaurants and stuffed animals. Other things were obviously enough, pacifiers and bibs. First communion and baptism outfits for each kid, lunch boxes and shoes with names written on the inside in sharpie so they could be returned to their forgetful owner.

Reese finally stood at the door, reaching out for the coat and pulling it on. He'd found boots that made the ensemble look something near perfect. His hands tucked into his pockets. "Thank you." For allowing him to hide from all the memories tucked into that trunk; for not running away at the first sign that Reese wasn't as fine as he liked to pretend.

"I'll toss it back in the closet and we can get going. Hopefully other people showed up to the party." he offered.

((I think you can wrap this with your next post?))

With that, Bruce slipped through the door and wound his way back to the bedroom, kneeling once again before the trunk to finish packing. One ear cocked towards the bathroom, listening for signs of distress. This time, he heard only footsteps and the whir of the vacuum cleaner, rather than angry mutters and shattered glass falling across tiled floors. He made short work of packing up the items, tried not to linger for too long on the toys and the costume pieces and the baby supplies, as he wanted neither to interlope nor to set Reese off again when the other man emerged from the bathroom.

Yet, briefly, his fingers lingered on a pacifier. Sentimental as he was, he had particular fondness for babies.

He managed to shut and lock the trunk before footsteps in the hall alerted him to Reese’s imminent return. Hangers and outfits from the closet returned to their proper place, and then the room was back in order. One could never tell that Reese had lost his temper here not long ago.

He dusted his hands and nodded at the other man’s comment. “I’m sure there are plenty of other people there.” Larissa never lacked for customers. “But she’ll still zero in on us as soon as we step foot through the door. So, best to get going.”

Into the night and the opportunity to disappear on the dance floor for a few hours.

((OOC: I declare us wrapped.))
