Larissa needed to go out. She needed to have some fun. And while she adored Bruce, he was not the person she turned to for a spontaneous evening. And though she was often more comfortable around Piper than many adults the kid was still fourteen and Larissa needed a drink. In these moods there was really only one person to turn to. She grabbed her holo and sent a message.

Later that evening she sat in On the Rocks, a perfect little section of the bar where they could not only enjoy everyone else singing but it gave them good access to the stage. She’d ordered the first round of drinks, a gold rush for Vels--him and his fancy smancy drinks, and a simple bourbon on the rocks for her. Three times she had to chase people off from the seat she saved as strangers worked up the nerve to try to talk to her.

The first few people up for karaoke had been tame, meek--nothing to write home about. When he got here, they would show this crowd how it was really done.

Once she caught sight of him coming in, Larissa grinned and slid his drink over to him. “Drink up, I’ve already put our names on the list for a song.” Like all of her friendships, her one with Vels was a strange one but it worked and they had more in common than a lot of people. To date he was one of the rare people she’d entrusted her secret with and that kind of trust was not easily given, especially to man considered so morally ambiguous.

Focused in soundwaves creation and manipulation, Vels can make sounds loud enough to break glass or even bones, or he can make perfect silence. He can hear every conversation in the city at every moment of every day (but he's gotten damn good at finding the ones that matter). His suppressants push his abilities down to a 100 yard diameter, so ... that's better, right?

Vels had been having a fine day with the Cartel. Things had gone as smoothly as could be expected. They'd had a discussion with one of the people in one of their branches that had tried to go rogue and what could have easily ended up bloody had ended up worked out with only a few threats thrown here or there.

It was all for show. No one's heart was in it, Vels had listened to them while they spoke.

So the text was received and agreed to, and at 8:30 he started to make his way to Nautas. He was right on time -- like a polished swiss watch. Nine tapped onto the clock and Vels Kruger walked through the door. He'd managed to dress down slightly, but he still looked a bit out of place here in his blazer. Perhaps it explained the strange drink choice to the bar tender in some silent way.

"Alright, good. What poison did you pick for us?" he asked, leaning back an raising a brow. The best part of karaoke for a man who controlled sound was that if things got too bad, he could just mute them like basically every singer on Ark's Got Talent. "I assume we're here to have a good time and not because something hit the fan in your life." and before she could get a word in edgewise he was making a conjecture. "Did you meet someone? Tell me his name."

Larissa may have threatened in her earlier text, but if there was one thing she knew about Vels it was that he was punctual. She tugged on the lapel of his blazer as he settled in next to her. “Aren’t you looking dapper tonight.” He never had to worry about standing out dresswise when she was around, Larissa rarely “dressed down” and tonight was no different as she was clad in one of her many tight, revealing black leather dresses.

She paused as the emcee announced the next name up. Not theirs. But soon. “Only the original rule breaker, the trail-blazer,” she bit her bottom lip, “and mmm, my favorite heartbreaker.” Pat Benatar’s Heartbreak was always Larissa go-to karaoke opening. It was fast paced and fun. It was one of those songs where it didn’t matter if you had the voice for it--which Vels did, she didn’t--because everyone sang along at the top of their lungs that no one could really hear you. It gave them a chance to get some drinks in before they got to the really challenging ballads and vocals and it usually endeared them to the crowd as a fan favorite so people didn’t get pissed off when they hogged the stage.

“Meet someone?” She arched a brow mischievously. “Hmm, let me see. His name was Patrick,” she said in a sultry tone, referencing one of the bartenders she often had a little fun with before...during...after shifts at Noc. “Marcus. Jessica.” She thought back to when she’d last seen him. “Oh and then there was Nicole and James. Adorable couple. Told them I was okay just watching but they insisted.”

She leaned over past Vels to take the lime off the rum and coke of the man next to him, giving the guy a wink as she sat back down with a wink. “Honestly, Vels, we’re not all hung up on one person like some people I know.” She said giving him a knowing look as she bit down on the lime wedge, amusement dancing in her eyes.

The evolute laughed as she pointed out his attire. There were certainly days that he looked far more dapper than today (some might have said 'far more ridiculous'). There was only so much that one could say for owning a variety of colors of suits -- everything from a soft, southern blue plaid to a conservative black. Perhaps it was the confidence with which he wore them that people had a tendency to just... no mention how peculiar it was even with the growing trends of colors that had been popping up recently. Or maybe it was that when Vels Kruger did just about anything, people just sort of let it happen. "Yeah? Well, I try. You wouldn't believe how many people at work have a vendetta against a good pair of jeans." Vels was one of them.

His entire face lit up when he realized that Larissa had chosen that song and the grin that cross his face was devilish and innocent all at once. "Fantastic." But that was all he said about it. He was to focused on the potential that she had found someone new, but that didn't seem to be the case.

He might have bristled if he'd been another man at the prod about how obsessed he was with Peyton. There were... certainly hints that he was a bit too intense about her -- but perhaps it was the kind of relationship that just worked. "One day you'll meet your other half and it'll all make sense." he said with a nod of certainty.

"Like Thelma and Louise or ... Romeo and Juliet."

Larissa rolled her eyes at his insistence that someday she’d find someone that she’d want to settle down with permanently. Fat chance. Not everyone wanted that life. Too boring and constricted with it’s white picket fences, two point five children, and a dog. The same schedules every day for work. Wake up, work, clean, deal with the kids, cook, sleep, and do it all over again day after day until you died. No thank you.

“You do know Romeo and Juliet was a tragedy right? Not a love story? Two kids who thought they were in love and knew more than the entire world and got themselves and four other people killed.”

It wasn’t a surprise that with Vels’ skewed sense of relationships and societal interaction in general that he’d use Romeo and Juliet as a prime example of soul mates. It was what he knew, fast paced, head over heels, consequences be damned, and death. Lots of death.

Larissa took another sip of her drink. The emcee came back on the mic. “Next up on stage please welcome Larissa and Vels!” She downed the rest of the drink and smiled at him.

“We’re up buttercup. Let’s go rock this.”

Vels raised a brow as she said that Romeo and Juliet wasn't a love story. A little smile crossed his lips. He wasn't threatening in a traditional way, that wasn't his style and even now, he didn't mean to sound cavalier, though he certainly did.

"Death doesn't make something a tragedy, Lar. People die every day in droves. World's not that black and white. Death is bad life is good. Some people deserve it, you know what I mean?

"Anyway, being young doesn't mean you're dumb. Probably did know more. People can be real idio--" he glanced over when he heard their names being called and got onto his feet, buttoning his suit back into place.

He practically danced up to the mic, and then everyone was looking at them because for a moment. Just long enough to make everyone pay attention, their ability to hear anything but the karaoke machine's intro had ceased.

It was probably for the better that the emcee had interrupted this particular conversation. As staunchly as Vels believed in shit like true love and soulmates and all that nonsense, Larissa believed just the opposite. And though she agreed with him on the fact that the world wasn’t black and white and some people definitely deserved what they got, their opinions would always differ when it came to love.

She followed him up to the stage, not quite prancing in the way that he did but with the confident swagger of someone who’d been up here many times before. Indeed, those who were regulars and who knew these two for their performances were already cheering and whistling.

Larissa nearly felt the moment all sound melted away and left nothing but the fast tempo drum beats that introed the song. 157 beats per minute. With those quick paced drum beats her own pulse rate ticked up.

That was the beauty of Vels’ powers. It was like tunnel vision but for sound. That hyper focus and attention and feeling of floating that she got from drugs, but this didn’t require a needle. Everything else, the chatter of the bar, the cheers, the sound of ice hitting the bottoms of glasses as drinks were made at the bar, the sounds from the kitchen, everything else faded and all anyone could hear in that moment were those glorious drums.

Larissa counted off the beat until the intro gave way to the first stanza and she sang, sharing the mic with Vels, giving him more direct access to it, knowing he was the better singer of them.

“Your love is like a tidal waaavveee, spinning over my head! Drownin’ me in your promises, better left unsaid.” Now was the point when Larissa made eye contact with some unsuspecting and random victim out in the audience. “You’re the right kind of dreamer, to release my inner fantasy.” She winked at the stranger, as always finding a way to turn karaoke into a flirt session.

Outside of karaoke nights with Larissa, Vels didn't sing often. In fact, there was a large number of people who might have claimed to know him well that didn't know that his abilities with sound went past making things louder and softer at his will. That one of the many features of his abilities was his perfect pitch.

He'd sung from the time he was able to walk and, so his parents had long ago claimed, before he was able to talk. He'd hummed songs to his parents. Of course, it was no indicator of his abilities, but perhaps it was just fate that music was in his soul before if became evident that it was likewise in his genes.

So he sang the song. He didn't have as flirtatious a stage presence as Larissa. In fact, one might point out that he was the kind of man who was enjoyable to watch because he so clearly enjoyed every moment that he was up there. He didn't care about the crowd. He didn't care about the lights shining in his eyes. Performers lived for the attention, musicians for the music.

Vels Kruger was the latter.

When the song ended, he didn't listen to the cheering and found the table they'd hopped up from, flopping back down. "Tell me you put us in for a second one already." He glanced up as the next person got onto stage. "Oh this one is going to be trash. She can barely stand." He seemed excited by it and he let out a whistle and clapped with his hands over his head.

"You never said what sparked this invitation." He pointed out. "Not love. So -- hate? Oh! Did that ex of yours swing by? The cop? Curls, kind of pretty?" he asked. "She's got a stick up her ass." he observed, which wasn't too surprising given how he wasn't the most lawful person that someone would know, and then added quickly as if it made up for it: "In a good way."

Maybe that was why these two worked so well as a karaoke duo. Larissa owned the stage and Vels owned the sound. She lingered at the stage as they finished, drinking up the praise and cheers that he so easily walked away from. She was less eager to leave the spotlight and did so only after blowing kisses to the crowd, winking at a select few she felt sure would buy her drinks later, and delaying her arrival to their table even further in order to give her number to a particularly good looking gentleman.

She flopped into her chair and smiled. “Yeah, but I told him to leave the song open for when we go up. He’ll cue up whatever you want then, it's your turn to pick.”

Larissa glanced back at the stage and smirked. “True,” she agreed of the poor drunk girl. “But she sure is living life.” That girl, despite the offkey singing, slurred words, and overall drunkenness was more appealing to Larissa than the boring, nondescript folks who hid in the back of the room and refused to be seen. At least she was trying. There was something to be said for confidence, whether natural or of the liquid courage variety.

Her attention was drawn back to her companion at the question. She laughed and motioned to the bartender for another round for them. “Elena?” She asked still amused at his description. “No, haven’t seen her in awhile and what a shame because even with a stick up her ass, damn is it a nice ass.” In fairness to Vels, her opinion of law enforcement was pretty much the same, Elena just had the special notation of being one who’d ended up in Larissa’s bed and that made things a little better. “APD hasn’t bothered me all that much lately come to think about it.” Which was strange given the news across the holos earlier this month about a pretty prominent chemist disappearing. She gave him a look that clearly said she was fishing for any information he might now and be willing to share. It was always a crapshoot with him.

“Not that I mind, after all it's not like I rely on them to pay the bills anymore.” Gone were the days of her scrounging money together and living week to week on whatever she could get. The revenue from Noc left her more than well off, especially since she’d bought the derelict building outright and lived in it.

Vels laughed and chimed "living life and killing the rest of us!" He didn't seem invested in the conversation about the other singer, however. He certainly didn't come here for the vocal control or sound quality. All in all, picky as he was, karaoke was like turning on a soundtrack to a children's movie that had gotten rated lower than a 1/5. Still, he enjoyed it.

"Oh? Was that her name?" he shook his head. "I always think it starts with an 'A'." he explained as if that gave him an excuse for something that she seemed like she wasn't even bothered by. "Like Ashley or Avery or... I don't know." he gave a shrug, glancing up when the drinks were set in front of him.

He quickly offered a thanks to the guy who set them down and then glanced back at Larissa. His eyes narrowed slightly -- not aggressively in any way, but almost as if he was trying to see through her. Finally, he lost interest in his soul searching an instead said, "Well maybe it was a worse break up than we thought. I mean -- if the APD is pissed at you for breaking someone's heart, it's only a matter of time."

His mind was working a mile a minute again, flying through all the scenarios and taking ones that he thought were the most interesting and running with them. "Maybe! The APD is a front and Elena's the boss-man." He suggested, "No, that's dumb. Oh!" He chimed again, "Maybe," this time he dragged out the word as he came up with an entirely new scenario.

"Maybe you are working for them, but it's like ... so deep under cover that even you don't know and they'll come up to you later and say a code word or something and you'll snap into your programming and give them all the info you know." Somehow, despite the enthusiasm and (in truth) ridiculous suggestion, he seemed honestly convinced this might be a real idea that the APD would implement.

“Elena.” Larissa said with a smirk as Vels rattled off a few names starting with “A”. “A”, “E”...close enough. For her part Larissa simply stared back at him as he squinted over at her trying to suss out whatever it was he was looking for. “Trust me, I’m not losing sleep over APD being pissed at me. They’ll come crawling back when they’re desperate and need something.”

When the drinks arrived, Larissa was quick to dive into hers, maybe talking about Elena bothered her more than she let on. Thankfully though, Vels was seemingly more interested in coming up with wild conspiracy theories about her forced employer.

“That sounds like the Entente.” She said with a laugh, her mind trying to imagine Elena of all people being the mysterious “Monarch”. Sometimes she thought the man, or woman, didn’t exist and it was a scare tactic to keep people afraid.

His next suggestion had her laughing harder. “That sounds like your group Vels.” Programming and secret code words and deep cover, that was more DEA’s sleazy game than little APD. “If I am so deep undercover that I’m being programmed, well then kudos to whoever is doing the programming because they made sure I’m badass.” She lifted her whiskey glass in a silent toast to the unknown person supposedly programming her mind.

It didn’t go unnoticed that Vels hadn’t bit on the drop about the missing scientist. But Larissa didn’t push the question, she had no personal interest in the matter regardless.

Vels laughed. "With how much we know about the Entente, she probably could be." His nose wrinkled with frustration. There was so much that he could hear. The Entente wasn't an ally of either of the organizations he pledged allegiance to.

He was mulling the idea over now. In fact, he likelihood that Elena wasn't going to receive a bit of surveillance over the next few days was pretty unlikely. He raised a brow though as she elaborated on the idea that she might be programmed.

A grin ran over his face, eyes shining. When he got excited, he looked like he was made from the embodiment of mischief. "If it does happen, you'll have to let me know who it was. I've got this theory--" he leaned in closer, and then scooted closer so that it was only them that could hear it.

It was an almost comical gesture for a man who could literally pull and push sound wherever he wanted it. Regardless, leaned in like a kid telling playground gossip, he said: "I'm pretty sure that the DEA has Ayo on the pay books and that's how he'll get into office. It's nothing official, but I'm waiting for the story to come out.

"There's this guy who runs the booking, like the place where they keep the nutzos, right? Like -- there was a Malachite back in the day who wouldn't take her meds because it wasn't in God's plan. I mean, my parents are Malachites, but sometimes they breed weirdos." He had lost track of his statement and then remember after taking a sip of his drink. "OH. Anyway, so this guy in booking, Grizzly--his parents were jerks I guess--said that he was given orders to put a tail on Ayo until the election finished and pull it after if he wins. You don't pull a tail after elections unless someone's going to get assassinated by the government. I've watched political dramas."

He leaned back, grinning like he'd told a great, fun story. "So if he gets killed in the next few months..." he grinned and shrugged, "I'll bet a pretty penny the DEA has the Monarch on speed dial."

Maybe he could have gone to jail for treason or slander. Who would dare?
(Maybe that arrogance was exactly what would get him in trouble one day.)

Larissa smirked and ran her finger around the edge of her glass as Vels leaned in to whisper conspiratorially. His words made her arch a brow though. The upcoming election between Evendale’s incumbent councilman and Ayo was a hot topic these days.

The idea that DEA could be backing an Evolute for a council position was an interesting one if she had any cards in the game or cared at all. Besides, when Vels got like this it was hard to know what was true or possible or just him getting all hyped up and spouting out craziness.

“All religion breeds weirdos,” she said with a derisive laugh but that comment was all she said for now as she let him expound and ramble.

And just as how it had been amusing and ironic that Vels, and all his sound manipulation glory, had leaned into her and whispered so as not to be heard, it was just as amusing and ironic that his justification for profound knowledge of political espionage was from fictional dramas. As if he weren’t knee deep in Ark’s crime and politics.

But he was rambling, Ayo on the paybooks, Ayo going to be assassinated. Those were two very different theories. “I’d take that bet. I bet if he gets elected he makes it a full year, no assassination attempts at all.” She wasn’t willing to bet the man wasn’t a plant by DEA.

Vels eyes glimmered. "How much money?" He asked and then added, "I need to buy my girl a diamond. I guess that's what you're supposed to do, you know? Like, she doesn't really wear a lot of rings, but I guess she'd wear a ring if I got her one?" he shrugged. "And my boss says getting a girl a CZ is like shooting blanks."

He shrugged. "Which I guess seems like it would be okay. I mean, I don't want to kill her, you know?" He took another sip and leaned back now that his secrets were done. "So how much do I get when Ayo gets a bullet through the brain?" and then he added, "Or an attempted bullet through the brain."

He glanced up at the next person who was taking the stage. "Oh, it's Lizzy!" He pointed and then waved a hand at the girl that they had run into at karaoke nights before. "Did you hear Liz and her boyfriend got hitched? Maybe it wasn't that Liz. I heard it was a shogun wedding."

“No, I don’t,” Larissa said but it wasn’t cruelly. For all her many flings and bed partners there had never been anyone she had been serious about. Certainly no one she ever thought about marriage or rings with. And it was a two way street. Sure, she had admirers, even maybe people who love...loved her...but marriage had never been anything even in the realm of her horizons.

Larissa laughed at his misinterpretation of the metaphor and honestly she couldn’t tell if he was joking or not. “That’s not the gun your boss was talking about, dear,” she said with a wink and made a finger gun and pointed it at his crotch before pulling the trigger.

“But let’s make it a good bet then, so I can at least help you to that down payment….if you win. Mmm, say, a thousand bucks?”

She took a drink and then had a thought and nearly spilled alcohol on herself as she jerked the glass back away from her lips. “Oh! And you can’t be the one pulling the trigger, that wouldn’t be fair since you’ve got money on it!”

Larissa looked to the stage and gave a noncommittal smile and tip of her glass to the girl getting ready to sing. She did not remember Lizzy but that didn’t matter. “How do you hear all these things?” It was one thing for her, people talked non-stop when they drank and bartenders were on par with therapists when it came to hearing people’s problems. She’d heard more confessions from across Noc’s bar than most priests did in a confessional.
