They had met like clockwork every other Friday from their first session in mid-February. On play nights, Reese would call after work to take Bruce’s order and then pick up their food on his way back up from Jacks. They would share dinner, decompress from their workday by swapping anecdotes, and then they would break to put away leftovers, clean up, change into scene-appropriate attire, and for Bruce to set out the necessary equipment. They played in Bruce’s bedroom and the older man set the scene with his specific instructions, while his earlier warnings from their first time remained in effect. With each scene, they hit their stride, and Reese had grown a bit more comfortable with the vulnerability and his body’s reactions, and there had been no miscommunications about expected remuneration since their first session.

The session before, they had started a new setting and story that had worked out well enough that Bruce had decided to adopt some of the themes. The moment Reese had crossed the threshold of the bedroom, the older man warned him, “Typical rules are in effect. Hands behind your back.”

The moment that Reese had complied with the instruction, Bruce had cuffed him with heavier manacles and applied an anklet with bells to Reese’s left leg, one that would jingle with every step, thus alerting Bruce to when the other man moved.

With that, Bruce squared his shoulders, stood, and dusted his hands. He then glanced at Reese, appraising him from head to toe. “You weren’t cheap,” he remarked coolly. “But your family’s loss was my gain. I trust you’ll be worth the price.”

Reese probably could have counted the number of things that he looked forward to in a month without taking a breath. It consisted at this point mostly of things that he did with Bruce; his time with his family; and now-and-again, a provided buffet lunch at work. And if someone had asked him to rank them, it would have been exactly in that order.

He didn't get into nearly as many fights as he once had. They happened something near weekly, which was better than it had once been, and the intensity of them had waned a bit as he had gotten used to the idea that he didn't need to be beaten in a dangerous way to feel like his penance was being paid.

And maybe that was where things had changed in Reese's mind to some extent over the last two and a half months. He got in fights to get bloodied, but he came here every other Friday evening to feel the sting of pain that pulsed pleasure through his body instead.

He nodded as his eyes lowered, his arms tucked behind his back, and his back straightened. He stood almost at attention the way a military soldier might have when militaries were something that still existed.

He felt the cuffs latch around his arms and his eyes shifted to look at the bell around his ankle. The smallest smile inched onto his face at the new accessory. He knew these rules perfectly, had internalized them perhaps more than either one of them realized (or perhaps more than they were willing to admit). And so he stood in silence and waited as his new master appraised him.

The psychology of a scene was as important as the physical aspects or the equipment used. Bruce had explained this to surrogates during job training when emphasizing the necessity of the little details. Fantasies, including BDSM, were equal parts theater and emotional rapport. They adopted personas, and utilized sets, props, and costumes just as their brethren on the stage did. In particular, the mental manipulator ha a flair for the costume aspects.

As he had since their first session together, Bruce stood there dressed to the nines in a dark suit that covered every inch of his skin apart from his hands, face, and neck. Poised and polished, the outfit had cost a pretty penny, yet he felt no embarrassment about sweating through the fabric. Calm, collected, and firmly in control; his body remained his own, and he owed Reese no vulnerability by showing off. Likewise, he had purchased a tank top for his friend, aware that no such article graced the younger man’s wardrobe. Plain white, it contrasted with the darker shades of Bruce’s outfit while showing off skin, thus prompting vulnerability; the fabric was comfortable but thin, selected in part because this would allow Reese to feel the thud and the sting of his punishments. Bruce had requested that Reese wear the same gym shorts, an unassuming light grey pair, that he had adopted since their second session, chosen for the same reason. The contrast and the minimal absorption of the cane, crop, flogger, or belt.

He waited for Reese to adopt the proper position – back straight, eyes downcast, arms now cuffed behind him, mouth shut – before further outlining their scene and providing Reese with the script for his own persona. “That young woman had her eye on you, but she couldn’t outbid me. A shame for you, I suppose, because I work my boys hard. Your skill sheet was rather paltry when I picked you up, but that’s hardly surprising. Pampered boy’s family falls on hard times and turns to the market to settle their debts. Have you ever done a day’s work before?”

The suggestion of the tank top had taken him a few days to agree to -- not because he had an issue with the more casual term wife beater, but because it showed his scars, the shiny details that looked like smoke and flame that had never left his skin. The long lines along his forearms from worse times. He had agreed with the caveat that the mention of his scars was a hard limit for him -- just as every other feature of the accident.

His eyes were glued to the floor when Bruce started speaking and he could feel the tickle run from the base of his spine; the one that he knew wasn't normal for this interaction between friends, and that he didn't dare bring up to Bruce for the danger of their friendship falling apart. Perhaps someone would have said it was sad if he had said it out loud, but he was far more dedicated to being able to be around Bruce at all in any capacity than he was dedicated to changing their relationship statuses.

If Bruce was interested, he'd give a sign. And if he gave a sign, Reese would act. It was as simple as that.

"No, Mr. Vaughan." He answered, voice steady.

Bruce had not required the explicit warning not to mention Reese’s scars, although he had promised to respect the hard limit. He knew that his friend was self-conscious about them, had noticed how the younger man only wore long-sleeved shirts or sweatshirts of his own accord, and that the only time he had adopted short-sleeves were for their sessions. They had discussed the scars a bit during Reese’s time at Shangri-La, as part of the broader discussion about the car accident and the effect on his life without cataloguing any specific one. They had also discussed the self-harm as an issue to address but, again, without sharing their individual origins.

The mental manipulator was an expert at playing pretend. For the purposes of this scene, the scars simply didn’t exist. There were plenty of other ways to comment and set the play session without remarking on the spider webs along Reese’s arms or the deeper cuts along his thighs.

“No, of course not.” His tone invited no reply, as this was not intended as the beginning of a dialogue between himself and his newly-purchased property. “You still have that shine around your face, evidence of your former station. We’ll have to do something about that.”

The mental manipulator produced the flogger from the desk and trailed the lashes across Reese’s back, careful to do so across the exposed skin to allow his friend the full sensory experience of the cool metal and the soft leather.

“Did they train you at all? Or were you kept up in the pen the entire time until auction?” He left the question open-ended, allowing Reese to take the gauntlet as he would.

There was something entirely pleasing about feeling the flogger run across his back. It had taken him only the second session (which had solidified in his mind that this was not something that was going to vanish) to begin to look forward to it. Reese tried not to linger too long on how much his time with Bruce mattered to him.

He waited listening to the explanations and absorbing all of the information that Bruce was giving him about the backstory, and then he opened the door for Reese to step through, figuratively, and Reese took the initiative.

In truth, he enjoyed being trained. Maybe it was because in his real life, he did so poorly at living up to expectations that in this one, he craved being the golden boy and the class pet. "They penned me, Mr. Vaughan." he said, and then added, "They said I'd make a better boy if my master taught me how to act, Mr. Vaughan."

He broke nothing about his stance, but his voice gave the prod -- the persona of a boy who didn't know what he was supposed to act like, "So what do you want?"

Bruce had been pleased to discover their compatibility in the lifestyle and the myriad ways that they complemented each other. This was yet another area, because the mental manipulator enjoyed training his submissives. It provided an outlet for the twin urges to praise and to correct, and provided a swell of warmth when his boys and girls learned and adjusted their mannerisms accordingly. It also served as an outgrowth of some of his more exacting preferences, the opportunity to dictate until someone met his specifications.

“That creates more work for me,” he murmured, as though offended by this rather than pleased with the opening. “But I’ve never shied away from getting my hands dirty.”

Reese’s persona broke two rules, and Bruce retaliated as expected, with two firm spanks across his backside in rapid succession. “You don’t speak out of turn,” he informed for the sake of the scene and reminded the younger man more broadly. “And you forgot my title. Don’t do it again.” His voice dipped low with an edge of warning.

He stepped around Reese’s body until he stood directly in front of him. One gloved hand - clad in white satin as though he was attending the opera rather than the fingerless leather of the last few sessions – brushed Reese’s left shoulder. “I desire a houseboy, and I expect compliance.”

Despite the put on displeasure, Reese knew that they were on the same page. They'd openly enough discussed each other's preferences that he knew giving Bruce the opportunity to train him to exactly what he wanted would be just as much in his wheel house as Reese poking at the scene's limits for punishment were.

For the first time in two weeks, Bruce would be graced with the little noises that Reese made -- the little grunting sighs that escaped him when they were engaging in the gentlest of their impact play. His breathing remained steady and he nodded to acknowledge the reminders as if he hadn't broken them intentionally to feel his friend strike him -- impatient.

He saw the white glove move towards him and he felt it touch his shoulder as his eyes closed for a moment. He liked to be touched just as much in scene as out of it. This time, he held his tongue, staying still and waiting, listening to the instruction that Bruce had given him. When his eyes opened again, he nodded to acknowledge that he was going to try his hardest to be the houseboy that would please his new master.

After their first couple of sessions, in the mornings after when the younger man was no longer recovering from subspace, they had discussed a few of Bruce’s preferences. The mental manipulator drew firm boundaries and never discussed what he enjoyed in the context of a romantic relationship, instead focused on areas of expertise and professional comfort coupled with reassurances about what he gained from their platonic arrangement. That he enjoyed training submissives to be good boys as much as he enjoyed punishing bad boys. That his provided them with the freedom to drift between the two templates in their scenes.

When Reese’s eyes slipped closed, Bruce took the opportunity to conduct a quick assessment of his friend’s posture and overall demeanor; he viewed the lapse for what it was, a sign of gathering his emotions rather than disobedience. Best to treat that as a boon and use it for their mutual advantage than deliver another series of corrections unnecessarily. When he received the nod of compliance, he patted the top of Reese’s head approvingly.

“Let’s begin with postures,” he declared firmly. “We’ll see how you kneel and take it from there. I give my boys three chance to learn their positions before I have to step in to correct them.”

Reese's eyes opened with the first pat on his head, eyes staying trained on the ground as he felt the rest of the gesture finish, putting him comfortably in place in the scene. He was given the next set of instructions which seemed simple enough.

Unlike their first scene, he hadn't recently been in a horribly bad fight that had damaged his body in a way that made his knees or body weak and so when he lowered himself onto the ground, it was with the grace of a man who had once been athletic and whose physical activity had never stopped, though the way that he got it had changed from a focus on sports to a focus on walking everywhere for fear of normal transportation means.

He kneeled in front of Bruce, knees against the ground, rear end resting almost again his heels, bound arms resting in his lap, back straight, eyes down, silent and waiting for his next instruction.

His persona today, after all, was not a boy who was intentionally disobedient, but ignorant of what he was expected to do and how he was expected to react in any given situation. A new, untrained boy who just didn't yet know how to be good.

Reese’s persona tonight differed greatly from the ones that he had adopted during their past sessions. The first time that they had played together, nearly two and a half months prior, he had tested the rules within five seconds of first hearing them – deliberately punctuating his acknowledgement with an f-bomb. For the majority of their scenes, the other man prodded at rules to earn swift discipline

Tonight, they would go a bit slower. Bruce still had to correct him, but it would be coupled with warnings and guidance.

Beginning with proper responses.

He touched the flat side of the riding crop to Reese cheek, a caress rather than a lightning-quick smack. He explained, “When you receive an order, you acknowledge it with, ‘Yes, Mr. Vaughan.’ That, and only that, is not considered speaking out of turn. You do the same when answering a question ; you must always include my title. Do you understand, boy?”

His voice was dispassionate, neither the stern taskmaster who doled out floggings and spankings nor the soothing pseudo-parental figure and dear friend who held Reese during aftercare. At the moment, he was an instructor, a master patiently teaching his new acquisition to serve him properly. Unimpressed by the performance thus far but not yet upset.

In many ways, Reese was testing out the new persona to see which he preferred more. They rarely did scenes that connected to one another, and so he'd suggested that a change of pace, maybe, would be fun. After he'd said it, he'd awkwardly tried to dance around this being "fun" since it was supposed to be for the purpose of helping him stop getting into fights. (It had to some extent; he rarely got into bad fights the week following.)

Regardless, the crop touched his face, and he immediately broke a rule -- a rich boy who wasn't used to being in this place. He looked up towards Bruce as he said: "Yes. I understand." He realized almost too late and quickly added: "Mr. Vaughan." in a voice that sounded flustered.

Then he repeated himself, still looking up, rules noted and momentarily rejected because he was Reese, and patience had not been a virtue he had ever had in his life. "I understand, Mr. Vaughan. I'll try to remember." He promised.

Bruce had agreed to the change of pace with no reservations. His philosophy about their arrangement – and fantasies more broadly – were that more than one goal or emotion could occur with the experience, and there was no reason to avoid accommodating all of them. Yes, he had proposed their sessions to Reese with the primary goal of avoiding permanent injury to the younger man and assuaging the older man’s concerns. However, they were friends, Reese had been away from the Scene for six and a half years, and Bruce was flexible and highly skilled in this area. Why not have fun with it? Why not experiment in a wholly platonic fashion?

The energy of their room was different from the past sessions. Reese’s demeanor was hesitant and resigned rather than cocky and deliberate. The broken rule was obviously a conscious choice by the younger man but not one in the context of his persona. That was a lapse.

It was a lapse and Bruce would greet it accordingly, particularly as it had been coupled with capitulation.

The crop’s keeper slid from the younger man’s cheek to tap the bridge of his nose. “Never look at me without permission, boy. That’s a sign of disrespect and I trust you wouldn’t disrespect me, now would you?”

A question – a test. An opportunity for Reese to demonstrate applied knowledge as he corrected himself.

Reese had admitted to no one except maybe a bartender at a dive in the middle of Spire (he'd been drunk and lost all at once) that these sessions had turned into what Reese kept calling a 'life line.' He couldn't put into words what it meant, but what he had relayed in fewer and more coherent words on that night knocking on the door in Spire that still held someone who wasn't his wife was that he liked them for the deeper level he got to see of his friend and the amount of special he got to be for however long they played.

And then Bruce held him and he felt happy and safe, which scared the shit out of him, but he would do anything to keep -- like a jitterbug addict.

Reese was still Reese, persona or not, and he considered as the crop moved from his cheek to his nose whether if he bit it and pulled it out of Bruce's hands if he would like it or be pissed about his prized crop getting teeth marks. Instead the gentle tap on the bridge of his nose elicited not real response.

The order came and Reese shifted slightly as he eyes lowered. This time, his back shifted out of the expected formation as he spoke, trying his hardest, but apparently not a quick study. (Or perhaps, Reese's appetite had already been whetted and he was trying to force Bruce's hand.) He swallowed. "I'm sorry, Mr. Vaughan. I would never want to disrespect you, Mr. Vaughan." he promised.

Bruce compartmentalized more easily than his friend did, which had been a necessary component of both of his careers. Drawing emotional boundaries was a survival skill for mental health professionals and had been the only way to maintain functionality at the rehabilitation center during his years as a therapist working with vulnerable clients, themselves often in the throes of withdrawal. Now, with Shangri-La- and during the decade and a half that the pleasure palace had operated – it became all the more important as a means of facilitating fantasies without incurring mental distress.

His role as Mr. Vaughan was the same role he might enact when acting as a Surrogate at Shangri-La if he had such duties and when showing employees the ropes. It was the same role he used at BDSM clubs when helping friends train their submissives. With his friend, he enjoyed himself, but his pleasure was not a priority because Reese’s pain and immersion coupled with safety remained paramount.

Yet, during aftercare, he was Bruce again. Bruce Vaughan – Reese’s only friend with whom he shared deep and accidental emotional intimacy. He might not crave these sessions in quite the same way as the younger man did, but he looked forward to them every other week and enjoyed them all the same.

In the moment, he watched as Reese’s back shifted out of position, inwardly marveling at the precision of his movement. Reese lacked both the emotional stability and the necessary ability to compartmentalize inherent in Surrogate work. At the same time, if only he could show off the younger man’s dedication to his persona right now.

“I should hope not.” Bruce took a step to the side, and his free hand touched the small of Reese’s back without preamble. His fingers ran along the younger man’s spine through the thin cotton of his tank top before pressing him back into position. “Your back must always remain straight. Bad posture makes you sloppy, and I disdain sloppiness.”
