"Can you place that sign above the drumkit, please??", Colette asked with an impulsive sigh, "If you place it right behind it, noone can read it properly..." Jeez, seriously, they can't even know where to put a damn sign, how could they even manage to organize an event such as this? She felt nervous, so nervous, that she lost her temper quite easily, she realized. She needed to calm herself down somehow, find a way to relax. She caught herself biting her nails, and walking around in circles, her mind fixed on the next few hours ahead, hundreds of different thoughts swirling through it every second.

This was a most important night. Well, the most important night of them all. She's never ever played at such an event before, and to such a large crowd they were expecting. If they'd be able to raise enough money to support a legal campaign against Griffin's Law, that would be a great help for the ECLU and for the general Evolute population as well. Such a drastic measure - which she considered to be utmost unlawful and quasi-fascistic - would take away the basic civil rights of all the Evolutes in the city, and force them to be treated as second-class citizens. That was something they had to stop from happening, and by all cost.

When the ECLU came up with the idea of holding a fundraiser charity concert in support of their anti-Griffin's law protests, Colette knew she had to be there, and volunteered to play a small gig along with other local bands. She gathered together a fine group of musicians, some of them from her own jazz-rock band, some of them from other places, while others were simply ECLU volunteers like herself, who played an instrument and played it at a proper level.

"Alright, guys. Everyone knows the setlist, right?", she asked, rather from herself than her bandmates, as she walked to the stage, which was being prepared. From her usual band, Sylvia was here to provide the vocals, Craig to play bass, and the ever-wonderful and ever-sarcastic Greg to play the drums. Joining them were Steven, a great, helpful guy from ECLU to play guitar, Helmut, a saxophonist Col knew from local pubs, and Jackie, a young, teenage oboe prodigy, who used to visit Colette for her counseling sessions.

Everyone was there, right on time, except for one person. Col looked around to make sure her eyes are not playing tricks on her. It seemed, Craig, her ever-reliant, awesomely ginger bassist was missing. Oh jeez, how can one be late from such an awesomely important event? Seriously, it's like Columbus missing the discovery of America or Napoleon arriving late to the battle of Austerlitz. She began formulating painful methods of torture for Greg in case he won't arrive within five minutes, when she suddenly heard Sylvia's voice, conversing with someone on the phone.

"Hey, Col... Okay, calm down... It seems Greg can't come tonight.", the singer turned to her keyboardist friend with a sad face, "He's down with a nasty case of diarrhea."

"Whaaaat????", Colette felt like if a volcano has just erupted under her feet, "So, where do we find a suitable bassist an hour before the show???"

Truth be told, Omri hadn’t even realized there was an ECLU event planned here today--he’d kinda just walked in on it, but now he watched the proceedings with interest, quietly nursing a drink while privately mulling over the issue these people were here to raise money for.

Honestly? Omri didn’t know which side of the debate he fell on. One one hand, he could see where Griffin’s Law was coming from. The man called the Djinn had hurt a lot of people--accidentally, but still--and the people keeping that man hidden had definitely exacerbated the problem. But to just paint everyone with the same broad brush, to say that certain rights applied to some people, but not others--that wasn’t right either. He didn’t know what the solution was, but as worked up as everyone was getting over this thing...it felt like a match just waiting to light a spark.

He hoped he was wrong.

Omri was jolted out of his thoughts by a sound that could only be described as a screech. Alarm shot through him as he twisted his head sharply towards the sound, eyes landing on the group of musicians setting up on stage. A concerned frown furrowed his brow, he set down his drink and started quickly towards them,

“Er...is everything alright?” He asked, fairly needlessly as he cast surreptitious glances at the gathered faces. Clearly everything was not alright, but this was really just more a polite way of asking do I need to knock someone out?

Colette felt like if the whole world had just collapsed on her shoulders, and started to panic. What now?? If they have to shut down this gig or postpone it, that would literally be disastrous. Noone at ECLU would believe her word and ask her help or anything. Besides, they're here for a good cause, and she talked all these guys into participating, playing for free and all, taking their time to help her, and now it'll all be in vain. Except, if they find a suitable bass player in the course of an hour. But how? And where? She started to think about all the bassists she knew, searching for one who might fill in and could be dragged here all in a sudden, and she couldn't find a single suitable candidate.

Going full ADHD, Colette started to walk around in circles faster and faster every second, shutting off the outside world, concentrating on the myriads of thoughts crossing her mind at the speed of light. What if Steve would fill in for Craig, they won't need a guitar player so badly. Or somehow she could play bass notes on her synthesizer. Or... or... or...

The girl was so preoccupied with her thoughts, that it took her a minute to realize that someone had addressed her and the band. She stopped and quickly turned around to see a dark-haired man waiting for her reply, after asking if everything is alright. Which, certainly wasn't the case. Colette almost bumped into the guy as she turned to him, "Can you by any chance play the bass guitar?", she asked at the speed of light, "Or the double bass? Electric upright bass? Bass notes on keyboards? Immitating the sound of a bass with your toenails?"

Omri’s mouth opened and closed several times in a fair imitation of a goldfish as the girl questioned him with the single-minded determination of a master interrogator. Well. This conversation had just taken a strange turn. Was it too late to back out and pretend he hadn’t noticed anything? Probably.

“I...I uh…” He honestly did not know the answer to that question. Questions. But that wasn’t the sort of answer you could give to a random stranger without sounding like a complete lunatic. “Not that I know of...” He smiled wanly, looking more than a little uneasy as he cast awkward glances around at the distressed looking band members.. ”I take it you’re missing your bass player?”

There was a solution to this problem. A fairly obvious one, if only to him. But it was a solution he wanted to avoid at all costs. ”I guess you can’t just...go on without one, huh?” He ventured, hopefully.

Colette looked at the man with the eyes of a hawk lurking at its prey. She was expecting him to turn out to be the surprise saviour of the night, coming up with either some idea where to find a suitable bass player or turning out to be one himself. However, her enthusiasm soon winded down, as the guy really had no idea what she was talking about. Or, at least, it seemed so.

"Oh, no, no.", she said on a sarcastic tone, still quite in ADHD-mode, "We're actually missing our dancing bear, who'd jump out of a cake and eat the audience. But yeah, we're also looking for a bass player." Wasn't it obvious, she thought. You don't need to be Sherlock Holmes to figure that out.

"Oh, well, we could, if I could play the bass notes on my synthesizer.", she then started to explain, "But that's quite unfeasable at the moment.", she said with a sad shrug, "We need to find someone who can play for us or else we have to cancel our show." That sounded like the apocalypse itself, and she intended it sound exactly like that. "He don't have to be Jaco Pastorius or James Jamerson, if he can play some damn root notes on the cheapest bass, that's fine enough."

Omri was torn, his desire to be helpful warring fiercely with his almost desperate need to steer as far clear of the spotlight as humanly possible. He could solve this problem. He could help this girl, and, he supposed, the larger cause of the ECLU, which as an Evolute he should probably care a bit more about.

The girl looked absolutely devastated, like someone had just kidnapped her puppy (or her dancing bear), and the world was coming to an end. She reminded of someone, he realized suddenly. Of course he didn’t know who--that would’ve been far too helpful--but the sense of recognition was there, and it tugged mercilessly on his heartstrings.

He heaved a sigh.

“If you can show me what to play…” He ventured uneasily. “I think I can copy the notes. I’m kind of...I'm an Evo.” He fumbled, as though that explained everything. "I mean--I'm kind of a mimic."

Colette's devastation suddenly turned into utmost curiosity as the random guy who addressed her turned out to actually be able to offer a solution to the problem. Not an ordinary solution, that's sure, but one uses whatever means are available when she's in such a desperate situation. This is an ECLU event, afterall, she should've expected some Evolutes turn up, and one has just found her, wanting to help.

"Copy? How exactly?", she asked with an eager and highly curious glance, like if she'd just found the Holy Grail, "You copy the movements or the musical notes or what?", she bubbled, "Can you do it by seeing a video recording or does it have to be played live for you to mimic it?"

She began to formulate ways how they could 'teach' this guy the basslines for their songs. Maybe they could show him recordings of Craig playing at rehearsals or ask Steven the guitar player to grab a bass and play them for the helpful stranger. Or whatever they can do to give this eager Jaco Pastorius wannabe a clue about how to play bass with their little band.
