Saturday morning brought Bruce to St. Philomena’s Children’s Hospital, which had long ago ceased any religious affiliation, the result of the Plague and the Dome. It was difficult to maintain ties to the Vatican when neither the City nor the religious organization existed in these modern times. But she had been venerated as the patron saint of babies, toddlers, and children, and who better to grace a children’s hospital with her name and angelic face cast in marble on the outside?

Bruce Vauhan had dressed down to what extent he did when going out and about in the broader community, had exchanged a suit jacket for a sweater vest. He’d shaved, finally, this morning, now that the last of the October and early November festivities were behind him. Clean shaven, hair carefully combed, and with a bag of stuffed animals and children’s books, he arrived at St. Philomena’s, made small talk with the receptionist while she signed him in for his volunteering. A nametag then affixed to his chest, Bruce followed the familiar path to the baby ward. En route, he dropped the goodies off with the distribution nurse who would make sure that the in-patient children each received some form of a gift to lift their spirits a bit.

Then, he reached the baby ward. Where the little children who had come down with illnesses, who had been born with birth defects, or too early, and needed the warmth of an adult’s arms. He tried to read stories to children at night, or to cradle babies in the mornings so their parents could have a few precious hours of sleep. A little girl, no older than a week, tiny fingers and toes wrapped in gloves and booties, was given to him, and he was led to a rocking chair in the volunteer room. Where there was only one other occupant, someone he had met before, had volunteered with several times before.

Bruce smiled at Bo as he settled in the rocking chair and cradled the tiny baby to his chest. “It’s always nice to see you, Bo,” he greeted warmly. The other man was one of the kindest, most genuine people Bruce had met, and, in turn, he meant the sentiment. “How are you this morning?”

Perhaps there were people who might have found it odd that a man in his early thirties dedicated almost every Saturday morning to a children's hospital; and perhaps those same people would have needed to take a seat realizing that almost every day of the week Bo gave his time to someone or something for no payback but a smile or a laugh. (And even when neither of those came, the reward was in the action; slowly but surely helping each and every individual reach Harmony.)

He was dressed the way he always was -- in a sweater. As his favorite type of garment by far (and should someone have asked, he might have explained they were far easier and cheaper to make than most other clothing), he had sweaters for every time of year. Even when the temperature outside touched the triple digits, Bo would don a cardigan or what he had dubbed "summer wool," which he claimed wasn't nearly as hot as it looked. Today, a turtleneck bundled him up, and in the baggy sleeves of it resided a tiny thing swaddled in blue.

When the door opened, Bo's song to the little creature in his arms was coming to an end. A hymn that he sang at church. Grave in melody and joyous in lyric, the song was whispered against the child's forehead as he rocked his gently.

"I'm doing well. Thank you." Bo smiled easily -- like a man who had handed back the apple of knowledge to the snake that begged for sin. "And yourself, Mr. Vaughan?" A habit from his traditions -- his sect didn't use first names generally in public other than with peers, and first names of people who would considered a superior were even more taboo. "I read in the paper that your party at Shangri-La was a success?"

He made little eye contact while he spoke mostly because the child in his arms seemed to fuss whenever Bo looked away. If it was made happy by being gazed at, he found no problem looking at curious brown eyes and a button of a nose.

“It was. And I'm always happy to be in the papers for something positive.” Bruce remarked, as opposed to negative rumors and libel. Yet his smile widened, though not from pride. Yes, the party had gone well, and he had managed to avoid any visits from nosy neighbors or from his nephew and his school chums, and no police officers had arrived to issue a noise complaint. To paraphrase a cheesy, often sarcastic sentiment, a good time was had by all.

However, none of that mattered right now. The party had passed, and his next large shindig wasn’t until December for the holidays. At the moment, there was only himself and the tiny bundle in his arms, and Bo and his own borrowed baby. The little girl Bruce held scrunched up her nose adorably, and Bruce felt his heart swell. Nothing enhanced his paternal instincts quite like cradling a baby. Avery was too old for him to cuddle this way, and so he donated whatever stirrings he felt to the NICU and the nursery. With one foot, he set the rocking chair into gentle motion, while strong arms held her securely to chest where she could feel his heartbeat behind his soft, warm sweater vest.

“I’m doing fine,” he assured the younger man. “It’s hard to believe the year is winding down.” In three days, he would vote, and his fingers were crossed for Oya Malik’s long-shot candidacy in Evendale, while he retained no hope for Haven’s race. In less than three weeks, they had Thanksgiving, and four days later, it would be December and then the triple whammy of Hanukkah, Christmas, and Boxing Day. He had to wonder where the time had gone.

“Do you mind some music?” Both hands occupied with holding the baby securely, he could only gesture vaguely towards his temples with his elbow for emphasis. That he intended to use his powers to fill the room, at least for a few minutes.

Bo nodded along, taking in all the information and storing it away safely. Unlike, perhaps, others it had never crossed his mind that what Bruce did was wrong in any way. People were helped by going to Shangri-La. Whether it was to explore fantasies that they could not live out in reality or to take a break for the mundanity of life, there was no reason to curse a man who offered people solace. That certainly seemed to be what Bruce offered.

"I can't believe the elections are here again." Bo said without thinking about how dangerous a subject it was. He wasn't sure that there was an Evolute in the city who would have voted for the man who was running for the Haven seat, and yet he had no doubts that he would take the seat again. He glanced up when Bruce asked about music and was about to offer his holo when he realized what Bruce meant.

He nodded. "If you would enjoy some, Mr. Vaughan, please, feel free." he rocked the child gently as he started to whine again and then his whining turned to crying and Bo stood up and started walking around the room as he bounced him. The child seemed to settle down.

He turned, then, mind still lingering on the ideas of the upcoming election. Slowly, he ventured, "If you do not mind the question, do you think Mr. Malik has a chance at winning? I haven't had the pleasure of visiting Evendale much recently." So he had no idea what it was like politically. Most of the time he spent in Haven or Jacks helping out those who needed his time more than he did.

As far as Bruce was concerned, Bo possessing a kind heart and a unique perspective, both of which Art would benefit from having in abundance. Reasons why he enjoyed volunteering with the younger man whenever they crossed paths.

He nodded along with the other man’s disbelief. “The year has certainly flown by.” For the most part without major incident. Measured in clients who came through Shangri-La, his long social calendar hosted both by him and by friends, Sunday brunches with his family in Evesdown, visits with the girls, monthly visits from the agent who administered his dosage of Supressant. And increasingly hostile comments from Rebecca Ramsey who, despite that (rather, because of it) would secure her Council seat for another year.

Bruce smiled at the man’s acquiescence, though he did this for the baby and not for himself. He could sing and hum as well as the next person who wasn’t a career musician, but the illusions were easier, gentler, and came with instrumental accompaniment. A moment later, the room filled with the soft, unmistakable sound of a piano, playing the tune of Bye-Lo. Gentle, soothing, all while he rocked his borrowed newborn and snuggled her between his chin and chest.

His attention returned to Bo at the question. “I hope he does. My entire family is rooting for him.” Unfortunately, neither Bruce nor his parents resided in Evendale and thus couldn’t cast votes for the man. But both his siblings and their spouses, all Evolutes themselves, planned to vote for him, and the entire group of extended Vaughans supported his campaign. He was so timid and non-threatening, the best bet for an Evolute to break this barrier, when facing a bland and not particularly well-supported incumbent. “I’ve seen a fair number of yard signs,” he offered optimistically. More than for Ramsey's opponent in Haven.

Bo found the music comforting and for a moment, he closed his eyes to try to identify the piece, it took him only a moment and he nodded. "That's a good choice." He said with a gentle smile as even the infant in his arms seemed to be comforted by it.

He nodded when Bruce started saying that there were a good number of signs in Evendale. "That's better than I've seen in Haven against Ramsey." Bo voiced carefully. He didn't often have a strong opinion, but his distaste for Ramsey was one of the few things he did have. He was sure that she was a fine woman given the chance and a place of security, but as a council woman, their interests varied too heavily for him to support her.

The baby finally settled and he went to take his seat again. "The Evolute population is higher there -- though I guess not higher than Evesdown. They were saying on the news, if the population actually shows up on election day... It could be like the election of 2116." The election wouldn't strike any kind of cord; nothing about the election had been extremely exciting, but apparently Bo had noticed (or theorized) something else about it.

He was no conspiracy theorist, but as a man in his early thirties, who lived alone save for his elderly grandfather, when he was around, and a menagerie of black sheep (figuratively, except for Wooly Willy), Bo had an exceptional amount of time to study history, art, and every combination of the two. He spent cold days indoors curled up by the little fire that kept his home warm, and he spent warm days photographing the world around them.

Bruce smiled softly, turned his attention from the baby to Bo while he answered, “Thank you. It’s one of my favorites.” This one, The Castle of Dramore, and Hobo’s Lullaby, though the last had depressing lyrics that earned questions from children, once verbal and capable of comprehending them. This was the most simplistic, the calmest, and thus perfect for a newborn who needed only to sleep and snuggle.

“She’s popular,” the mental manipulator said in a voice utterly devoid of enthusiasm. How many years had he lived in Haven, how many elections had he supported her opponent, whoever they were (as long as they weren’t as openly bigoted, at which point he cast a protest vote)? Her support remained steady among the wealthy, and the enclaves of those who deliberately isolated themselves from anyone different. Setting aside her beliefs about Evolutes for the moment, she had little compassion for the homeless in Jacks, which made her no friend to Bruce, and he assumed to Bo as a member of his compassionate Malachite sect. “It’s disappointing, and we’re surely in for another year like this past one.”

Or worse, should her prejudices grow as they had over the past few years. These thoughts had led to his urge to run to unseat her, though he had a number of demerits beyond Ramsey’s popularity among Haven residents.

“That was a bit before my time,” Bruce informed the other man gently. To have been eligible to vote in the 2116 election, he would have to be his parents’ age, rather than his own Instead, 2116 was half a decade before his birth. He’d studied enough history and political science to graduate, but his area of focus had been psychology. The date held no particular significance to him, and so he required an explanation so he could follow along. “What made it a watershed moment?”

Bo's eyes were situated on the baby in his arms who had drifted off to sleep now, safe and warm in the arms of a man that it didn't know. Bo liked to imagine that at some point in his future, a child would know him as more than just warm arms and a gentle smile for a day, but Malachi knew his prayer and his path and would give him what he was meant to have.

"Many in Haven certainly have a select interest." Bo agreed, civilly. He could not fault those who wished to furthur thier own Harmony just as he hoped that he was not faulted when he wished to futhur his own for personal reasons. (They were few and far between, but selfish moments even happened for Bo Fierro; and on those days, he hoped that he was forgiven for his transgressions.) "Their vote is their own; or it would be a flawed system." he smiled.

Comfortably seated he crossed his legs and only then frowned. It was, of course, before Bo's time as well, but he had studied it when he had been young at the temple. "The Malachites voted that year." he answered. The Malachites were a mixed up group; hard to pin down for any specific party, but the candidate that year had promised to build their community center and clean up the neighborhoods around the Temple.

"I suppose it was not a watershed so much as a symbol. A man who can get the support of an entire group often wins. If Evesdown ran a candidate, I'm sure he would win should the majority of the neighborhood show." Bo couldn't imagine how many of the homeless in Sanctuary Park or the poor who worked three or four jobs to meet their mortgages were the people who would sway the vote if Evesdown united.

Not a Malachite, and one more concerned with doing good now and living an ethical life than he was with seeking forgiveness, Bruce could fault his neighbors for their greed, prejudices, and selfishness. He did, though behind closed doors due to his unwillingness lacked access to the generational wealth that many of Haven’s residents possessed. His father had drawn up plans for a public housing complex near Sanctuary park, to give the homeless somewhere more sturdy than their tents. A side project, not one commissioned by the city; one that would never see the light of day because it might involve shifting money around, or, forbid, a miniscule tax increase. But they had money to issue IDs and administer DNA tests to every resident to ensure that Evolutes were properly classified.

“I don’t think that changing hearts and minds is the same as removing free will,” he admitted, while the lullaby continued in the background for the babies’ benefit. He possessed the unique ability to draw that distinction because he could do both rather than confine his thoughts to musings. He would never do the latter, but vigorously advocating for a position with the hope of changing another person’s mind? Was that not the foundation of a free, democratic society?

He nodded along with Bo’s explanation, both as a history lesson and as something to take into consideration for a topic he had poked at on and off for a while now. He accepted the validity of the younger man’s broader point about the power of a (numerically) dominant group’s ability to shape an election if they had an acceptable candidate to support. He’d shared a similar sentiment before with his family, and a few times as a starry-eyed teenager attending the neighborhood high school in Evesdown, with his confidence that within his lifetime they would swear in an Evolute representative to the City Council.

He smiled into the sleepy features of the baby in his arms, and when he spoke, he did so in singsong, though his question was directed to Bo, not to this tiny girl. What did she know of the world to answer, even if she’d mastered the power of language?

“Is there something the Malachites are unified in favor of, or against, in this election?” He leaned forward to nuzzle is chin in the girl’s soft, dark fuzz. “If the question is untoward, by all means, you aren’t obligated to answer, but I’m not plugged into those issues the same way I am into Haven’s climate.”

Which would vote overwhelmingly for Rebecca Ramsey, as they had the year before, and the one before that, going back to the beginning of the woman’s career.

Bo smiled along with the sentiment that changing mind and affecting free will were two different aspects. It was one thing to get rid of every bagel but pumpernickel and an entirely different thing to explain what pumpernickel's virtues were. One was acceptable in his mind; the other un-.

Each person's Harmony was dictated by his or her own experience, and the experience of one affected the experience of another in ways that no one could expect. Minute to colossal, every action had a reaction -- a scientific process that transferred into the realm of philosophy of existence (at least in Bo's mind). Sometimes letting someone go ahead of you in line was as important as loaning a friend a thousand dollars while they were between jobs.

Circumstances were variable and people were complex -- no equation could have explained what produced Harmony, and yet Bo believed that he could see it when it was in front of him. "If the world had a bit more discussion and a little less debate, I think we would find ourselves understanding one another much more and fearing one another much less."

Likely, by the time that they left this room, Bo would have been able to run Shangri-La. His abilities were something that people feared because yesterday, he could have short circuited the SkyRail and a week ago he could have understood a child's cries with perfect clarity. Rumors did not fly about him as they did about Bruce (partly because Bo did not flaunt his powers in any way), but the DEA kept an eye on him as if he were a T1 or T2 instead of his true tier and called him in as frequently as they had the barest cause, long under the impression that they could convince him to join their ranks.

Bo was organizing the child's hair, carefully giving the sleeping infant a side part and then a faux hawk, so that, even asleep, the knowledge that Bo was an ever-present force, warm and comforting., never wavered. "No question is untoward, Mr. Vaughan. You can ask me anything you want." he offered with assurance. A stranger could have likely walked up to Bo and asked him what his favorite sexual position was and, assuming the situation would not have made others uncomfortable with its answer, Bo would have answered without a hesitation.

"Currently, the Malachites are rather divided on many political issues." he answered. "So far as I am aware. Many of us, though, are hoping to have some of our holidays embedded into the calendar -- A far reach, I know. There's a large sect trying to build a temple in Spire... The location is important." he offered without explanation. It was rare anyone wanted a history and religious theory lesson in polite discussion and Bo knew he skirted the edge more often than he should have. "Apparently the permits are difficult to acquire. I don't know a single Malachite who doesn't hope they are able to aspire to their vision."

A smile flitted across Bruce’s lips. He expected no different from Bo: a gentle statement intended to minimize judgment and argument while still stating his opinions in the kindest terms possible. Ark would do better to produce more people like the younger man, and each interaction they shared only further solidified his opinion there. “If only we all met in good faith.”

Not all people were amenable to discussion, nor should all topics find themselves on the table. Bruce had little interest in listening to the more reactionary members of TU expound upon how he and his family were inhuman monsters for their powers, or how they should be stripped of their rights under the law, rounded up, and have their property repatriated by the city. Or to the Entente attempt to justify the harm they caused.

As Bo spoke, Bruce leaned closer, though mindful of the baby in his arms, as he had no wish to jostle her. Head cocked just slightly, eyes drawn to the younger man as he drank in this rare insight into a religious community about which he knew relatively little beyond the basics. Between the temple in Haven and the large population in Evesdown, it remained impossible to know nothing despite the fact that he had never attended one of their services (and hadn’t stepped foot in the house of worship of his own childhood in many years). Nodding along as Bo explained first that there remained divisions among the Malachites, as there was among all groups, followed by a list of a few different matters important to various subgroups.

Their holidays on the calendar. Domesday was a holiday celebrated by the entire City, not only the 24th, but both the 9th and the 1st, the last of which marked their new year. Those were already on the calendar, so the mental manipulator could only imagine that the other man meant more minor holidays, or, he supposed, the entire month of September, since the Malachites considered the month as holy as Ramadan. He could sympathize in one respect; as a man of many holidays, only a small number of which found acknowledgement in broader society, he understood the difficulty inherent in finding balance.

As for the temple in Spire, that sounded in some ways like a repeat of what Bo had explained only a few moments ago, about the 2116 election. A construction project couldbe a rallying symbol, though Bruce had heard nothing from the Spire race or the Jacks one that indicated that this had become a campaign issue at all, let alone a plank in a platform.

“That seems reasonable,” he remarked, unwilling to let that hang in the air as though he hadn’t heard Bo’s explanation or otherwise found fault. Then, in the interest of reciprocal sharing, he added, “I’d like to see a public housing complex in Sanctuary Park.”

To replace the tent city and provide the homeless with permanent shelter. His current and presumably future Councilwoman had as much interest in this as his father’s supervisors, which ensured that it would never come to pass.

The bundle in his arms rooted against his chest, and Bruce drew her back. In singsong, he admonished, "Those don't do anything you'd be interested in, Sweetheart. I'm sorry to disappoint."

Bo might have blushed and offered a thank you if he could have heard the kindness that jostled in Bruce's head. Perhaps because of his kindness, he rarely heard the words directed towards him. People more often took advantage of Bo's gentility than reveled in the rarity of it. Still, he found no fault in it. Some people expressed their gratitude in words and others did not.

He nodded to Bruce's statement about the sect who aspired to gain a new temple and the seemingly reasonable goal. It would have been less frustrating should it have not been in negotiation for over a year at this point, but they would get it or they would not as Malachi saw fit. Should he deny them that location, they would find another somewhere better for them, he was sure of it.

He nodded. "That would be lovely. I have often written to Ms. Jefferson with my concerns about the state of Sanctuary Park. When I go to the Rec Center, I often stop by to give them what I am able." It was no secret that Bo was not rich -- his clothing, while not ratty, was aged and pilled in some spots, faded from multiple washes. His income went almost entirely to helping others, and the only reason, likely, that he was above water was that his Uncle allowed him to stay with him for a very small amount of rent should he help around the cemetery. "It rarely makes so much as a dent, but one can only give what they have."

Upset was not a word that would have described the look, but disappointed might have. He wanted to fix this glaring problem in the city. He wished to help these people who needed help, and he could not in a way that was the one that they needed. He did his best in every facet of life -- this one he failed in no matter how desperately he tried.

"Have you also written to Ms. Jefferson?" he asked as he got onto his feet, moving towards where they kept the formula in the volunteer room and started to mix it before tucking it into the little microwave for only a few seconds to warm it so that it tasted and felt right to a little mouth. "They say that the more often a politician sees a request and in many different hands, the more likely they are to put credence in it." He tested the nipple against his arm to make sure it was working before handing the bottle to Bruce.

Bruce grew thoughtful and silent as Bo revealed – reminded, since this was not a secret, but it drew the mental manipulator’s attention – how he spent his free time. His attention turned from the baby briefly as his gaze raked Bo from head to toe. From the younger man’s peaceful expression and the glasses on the bridge of his nose (a pair that he hadn’t seen before, though Bruce had noticed that this was one of the few allowances Bo granted himself) to his well-worn sweater and the way his trousers were giving way in the knees to the fraying shoelaces holding together his shoes. The wheels of his mind began to turn, and he answered Bo’s question with an apparent non-sequitur. “Tell me, Mr. Fierro,” he addressed Bo by the conventions of the younger man’s Malachite sect. “When is your birthday?”

Then his gaze returned to the newborn in his arms, and he pressed a soft kiss to the top of her head as he shifted her from his chest to cradle in his arms. A safe position for feeding. She knew nothing of homelessness or of Sanctuary Park or the names of the Council members who were responsible for all governance in their city or the ID that she would receive upon discharge. Only a few days old, she knew only this room, the nursery, and the maternity room where her mother still recovered from giving birth. She knew hunger and satiety. She knew sleep and wakefulness. She knew clean and wet and soiled. She knew warmth and her mother’s scent and the sounds of voices though the words meant nothing to her, mattered not at all beyond the attention she received.

The innocence was precious.

The mental manipulator took the proffered bottle with a sincere “Thank you,” before he touched the nipple to the baby’s lips to engage her rooting reflex. Her tiny mouth struggled briefly before taking the nipple and suckling softly.

Only then did he answer Bo’s question in a topical manner. “I remember that from high school civics, and I have. For what good that’s done when my address falls outside of her district.” Sanctuary Park resided in hers, however, along with his parents’ home, and he had mentioned that in his one-sided correspondence; that he had grown up in Jacks and his parents still resided there. The first time he’d received a form letter in response, thanking him for his interest. He’d received nothing since then.

Not that his own Councilwoman was any better about acknowledging him. He’d sent her office a complaint – not a request letter – after her rant about Evolutes. He supposed it was a victory that there had been no response at all, rather than retaliation. Still, she would win reelection in a landside.

He had such a long year ahead of him.

“You’re a hungry girl,” he remarked melodiously to the bundle in his arms, now eagerly drinking her formula. The smile on his lips spread so wide that they might freeze in that position, if the elderly women in his neighborhood were correct about their knowledge of anatomy (which they were not).

His next words were directed not to her but to Bo. “What do you have on the agenda for the rest of the day?”

Bo noticed that the question did not follow logically, so far as he could tell, with the conversation they were having, but he had no reason to hide his date of birth from Bruce. Bo saw no reason that Bruce would have wanted it to hurt anyone, and certainly there was nothing secret about it. Bo's birthday was a publicly on record as his evolute status and his tier and ability. "Two days after Resolution Day. January the 3rd. I would give you my ID but--" when they signed in to take care of the children, IDs were taken to make sure people's identities were verified.

The little boy in his arms was making the quiet baby snores he had ever heard and he let his fingers run over the child's soft skin. He was thinking the same thing as Bruce. He did not envy the child in his arms -- for envy was something that pulled and plucked at Harmony, but he hoped it would never see the struggles or feel those that plagued Bo.

He was kind, but he was not blind or stupid. He saw the way that he was treated, and he knew it was wrong. He did not know this child's status, and he hoped that by the time thirty years had passed, this boy would never once know the feeling of being asked for an ID at a grocery store or having the DEA escort him off of someone's property without warning.

"It is the best that a citizen is able to do." He said with a soft smile. "We cast votes, send letters, and attend demonstrations, when safe and appropriate. They always say a peaceful solution is the best solution." And that seemed only fair. ELL had made no more progress than ECLU so far as Bo could see, and they had put so many people into terror.

There was enough fear in the world that he saw no point in adding to it.

He raised a brow at the question of what he was doing after this. "It's Saturday." He said and the smiled softly. "I am going down to help clean Nautas after the festival." he said simply. Domesday was wonderful, of course. But people littered as they had since the beginning of time. He always helped organize volunteers to clean up whatever area had hosted the festival on the Saturday after it ended. The maintenance crews of course had done much of the work, but it was only fair to show their thankfulness to the district that spent their time and effort clearing up a festival that was in many ways for the Malachite's benefit.

"Do you have anything planned for this evening?" he asked

Bruce realized that the question was abrupt, but he had no better way to inquire, nd the wheels had turned in his mind. He needed this information so that he could go shopping for the other man and buy him a proper birthday present.

“I wouldn’t want to take it even if you could,” Bruce supplied for him, sidestepping the logistical issue that arose from both their IDs currently in custody of the front desk, ensuring that neither of them could abscond with a baby and disappear with anonymity into the city around them.

Well, Bruce could, but that had less to do with the ID itself and more to do with the power listed on the front. He had no intention of gathering this baby into his arms and making a run for it – denying her parents the ability to love and raise her; just as he had no particular interest in taking Bo’s ID in hand to review the birthday. He trusted the other man to know his own date of birth and to relay it honestly, as Bo applied honesty in all walks of life. The mental manipulator loathed being carded, and he would never turn that differential onto a person he liked, to force them into that place of subservience, to humiliate them. Certainly not to satisfy his own curiosity or to tar an otherwise well-intentioned deed with such an act.

His bundle spit the nipple from her mouth, prompting Bruce to draw back the bottle. Still speaking in singsong to her, he asked, “Are you full already, Sweetheart?” Though he expected no true response given her inability to understand or formulate spoken language, he paused a moment and then brought her to his shoulder to burp her lightly. Large hand patted her back while he focused on Bo. “I prefer peace myself.”

He frequently wrote checks to the ECLU to advance their cause, while he had little tolerance for the ELL. That type of violence only brought increased police presence to Evesdown, and Bruce believed the residents deserved the same peace of mind as his neighbors in Haven. Irrespective of the inroads of TU up there.

Bruce chuckled softly as Bo explained his plans to provide more in-depth cleaning services than the Department of Sanitation had provided. A quiet burp from the baby signaled she had finished, and he shifted her again, offering the bottle should she demonstrate renewed interest with more room in her stomach. “You’re an inspiration to us all,” he informed the other man, sincere despite the platitudes that such a statement conjured.

As for his own plans… “I’d called a friend and invited him out to dinner, but he never got back to me about it.”
