May 16th

Following this footage

The video wasn’t the worst thing Murad had ever seen, not by a long shot. Didn’t make it less disturbing. He was rewatching it on his phone on the way over—his new partner was driving (she preferred to, she’d said, probably hearing that Murad’s own driving had taken a turn from fast to reckless as of late). He knew the man on the video—well, kind of. Actually, he knew both. He’d met Judge Wen once before, working on a case. And the man with the gun…

Well, it was the guy he’d tried to pick up at the bar a couple of months ago. The weird evo in the nice suit. Small world, he guessed.

He’d been called in to the initial crime scene as he was still one of the more senior detectives on the job, but had been surprised when the captain and his new lieutenant had decided to give the case to him.

“Personal choices aside, you’ve got a shit ton of experience and a good rep in the public eye. And you’re an evo, which removes the prejudice aspect of it,” the captain had said without preamble. “So you’re on this one, unless you have a damn good reason not to be.”

“Good reason?” Murad slid a glance at his former lieutenant of organized crime, the one who’d requested this transfer in the first place. He wasn’t quite sure why she was here at all.

“If where you’re putting your dick is influencing how you feel about evos or anything else,” she translated.

Right. He didn’t sigh, didn’t flinch, just nodded. “Not gonna be a problem.” On multiple levels. What was the point of protesting? He’d made this bed, no one to blame for it but himself. He could be patient enough to climb back into some good graces, even if the implications in her voice made him want to snarl. “I’ve seen the video. The video seems pretty clear. We’ll go pick him up.”

“Bring backup. We need good optics on this one, make an example of him—no judges get killed in this town without consequences.”

So here he was, in Haven—and a nice neighborhood, too, better than he could afford—wondering why the whole thing felt…off to him. Murad was not much of one for instincts. Instincts could be easily fooled. But that didn’t stop the weird nagging feeling.

They’d come in quietly—the captain had wanted sirens blaring but it was a case, not a show, damn it, and Murad didn’t want the suspect to get spooked—and Murad got out of the car as the other four cars arrived. He was wearing a bullet-proof vest, just to be on the safe side (more show, he translated mentally), and there were six other cops with them. Half of them had suppressant rifles rather than real guns, the only smart thing Murad found about this entire endeavor. He nodded to all of them, then lead the way up the stairs to Vel’s apartment, flashing his badge at whatever security there was and telling one or two officers to stay behind and make sure they didn’t alert anyone.

When they made it to the door, he was the one who rapped sharply. “Vels Kruger?” he called. “Detective Hassan with APD Homicide. Open up, we need to talk to you about the murder of Judge Juan Wen.”

Focused in soundwaves creation and manipulation, Vels can make sounds loud enough to break glass or even bones, or he can make perfect silence. He can hear every conversation in the city at every moment of every day (but he's gotten damn good at finding the ones that matter). His suppressants push his abilities down to a 100 yard diameter, so ... that's better, right?

Vels had spent that morning trying to perfect a speech about love, which he wanted to have in his back pocket should the perfect moment ever pop up. He had decided that Omri was the perfect person to test it on, and so he'd called him at four in the morning to have him come over so that he could get feedback.

They were revising some of his phrasing for something that sounded "more romantic" than the candor piece that Vels had come up with the night before. Most of it was walking the tightrope between a stalker and a best friend -- phrases that wouldn't have been used in a normal relationship were tossed left and right to try to express the man's feelings, which were complicated at best.

He was in the middle of saying: "If someone looked at you the wrong way, I'd buy wood nails..." when one of his security cameras got the first note that someone was coming to him home; and then he heard the knock on the door, and went hopping over to it, grinning at Omri like a child who had heard their parents announce the arrival of their closest friend.

Bouncing over to the door, Vels opened it with a grin on his face, and while the smile didn't fade, his head cocked with confusion about what this was about.

Who?

He hadn't killed anyone recently. He had no new name inked onto his body to remind himself of the horror that he brought to this city against his will. He opened the door wider, grin still on his face as he looked at the men in their bullet proof vests, guns in their hands.

He could heard the static on the radios downstairs. He could hear the number of heart beats that weren't supposed to be here. He could hear the whispers of murderer and killer; dangerous; approach with caution. He hadn't needed a knock or a camera to tell that someone was approaching his apartment -- he didn't need to see the man who had broken into a cold sweat behind Murad to know that they were frightened of him.

"How can I help you?" He chimed, "You want water? Orange juice? I have brandy, but it burns and it's morning. Did you know drinking before five in the evening makes you an alcoholic? So probably not brandy -- don't want to start down that road. It's dangerous. Who's Judge Juan Wen? That's a great name. Juan Wen." He repeated.

“...we need to talk to you about the murder of Judge Juan Wen.”

Omri glanced up sharply, barely had time to register the words before Vels was throwing open the door, smiling for all the world like he’d been expecting his best friend. His eyes narrowed as he took stock of the men on the other side. Too many, wearing too much gear, with far too many guns. Clearly they weren’t here just to have a friendly chat.

Moving slowly and deliberately, so as not to spook those clearly already spooked, Omri rose from his chair and made his way closer. He stopped a foot or so behind Vels, towering over the rest of them, peering wordlessly down at the APD leader with a fierce look that in no way mirrored his employer’s carefree expression. Say this for him: he might not be much of a bodyguard, but he sure as hell looked the part.

While he remained silent and watchful, his hands were open at his sides, his fingers flexing ever so slightly even as his eyes flicked between each of the men. He took stock of their weapons, their equipment, the sheer number of them, counting and calculating and thinking through the various and violent ways in which this could play out.

((So sorry for the wait friends!))

In Murad’s experience, there weren’t a lot of killers who opened the door with a pleasant smile and an offer of a beverage. He’d met some cool customers in his time—mostly cartel, but still—but no one quite like that. His eyes narrowed slightly as he watched the man. Unlike the men behind him, he did not break into a sweat, although his heartrate did increase ever so slightly just from the usual adrenaline rush. His eyes widened, however, when he saw Omri come up and loom behind Vels. Who the fuck was this? He hadn’t been on the tape, and after that night at the bar, Murad was pretty damn sure that Vels wasn’t gay—so that ruled out boyfriend or possible accomplice.

And he’d known Vels was weird, but he hadn’t been expecting the man to act so…normal. Honestly, he’d been expecting the man to bold—hence why he’d set up men along the perimeter as well. Better safe than sorry, and it wasn’t like this was his first rodeo. The man in the video had been bold.

But perhaps he substituted ballsy for bold. That would make more sense.

“Yeah, funny,” he said, shaking his head. He sounded exactly the same in the video—weird. “The guy you killed. We have you on camera. Now hands up where I can see them and we’ll be fine, we clear?” He switched his focus to Omri and gave him a look that most perps found—well, at least moderately threatening. “And you, stay where you are, don’t move. I don’t know if you’re involved but I’ve got enough men to take ‘em down easily.” He turned his attention to Vels. “So, Mr. Kruger, I recommend you come with us quietly. We’ll take you in for questioning and book you for the murder of Judge Juan Wen.”

Perhaps Vels thought they were joking (or perhaps he had no concept of what was really happening). He was a hero -- it was what he had told Murad at the bar where they'd met prior. (Their only prior experience with one another, and perhaps for both the best and the worst.) Somehow, even as Murad laid out the reason for his visit -- as if he hadn't already said that he was being arrested for his murder, Vels kept smiling.

The smile stayed and he looked over his shoulder at Omri as if he were waiting for an explanation that this was a prank.

Regardless of his lingering grin, his hands went up in the air so that they could be seen. It wasn't that however that made him dangerous. He didn't use guns. He had made that clear enough to Murad. He wasn't going to tug his piece out and start firing as they ran for the hills. "How?" he asked, and then Murad said that his best choice was to come quietly. So instead of stopping talking, the entire room muted.

It was eerie at best. The sound of heart beats in people's ears vanished. The sound of the street, the sound of foot steps on the above floor. Headphone went dead, static on radios silenced. Perhaps it would be accidentally a show of force, but Vels didn't mean for it to be that way. Murad had requested it, and Vels, for all the features of him that were dangerous, had matching features that tried.

He spoke again and they would find that the only noises that could be heard were the triad of them until Murad requested that the sound come back. "But I've never met him ..." And he said it still with his arms in the air. His smile faded only slightly, like he was waiting for a bunch of Cartel members to jump out, throw confetti, and shout Surprise! -- which would have been very poor planning because the shouting would be lost on the muted room. He hoped that Peter planned better than that...

Omri froze, as much from Murad’s fearsome expression as the words that were coming out of his mouth. His eyes swept back down the towards the hallway, quickly counting, assessing the odds, and not finding them at all favorable. That...was a lot of men. A lot of men with a lot of weapons and crystal clear firing lines. And they were all here with the sole aim of bringing down his boss, of charging him with murder.

Fantastic.

For all his apparent naivete, Omri had no illusions as to what Vels was capable of. He might ignore it, might push it to the back of his mind and refuse to acknowledge the side of his friend that he didn’t want to see, but he knew. He understood who Vels worked for and the the things he’d done. But he also knew that his friends apparent lunacy masked a fierce intellect--one more than capable of remembering to check for cams before he up and offed someone. This didn’t add up. His mind raced as his eyes flicked between Vels and Murad, assessing his options.

And then, quite abruptly, the world went silent.

Omri had grown accustomed to Vels’ occasional bouts of silence--and his tendency to take such commands literally. Of course, it never failed to send shivers down his spine, but he was nonetheless more prepared to deal with it than the officers in front of them. Without giving himself enough time to think better of it, he took advantage of the ensuing distraction to move between Vels and the cop, hands up, palms open. “Let’s calm down, shall we? No need for threats. This must be a misunderstanding...”

The smile was making the officers behind him nervous, he could tell. He could hear moving, the tightening of fingers on triggers, and the increased breathing. He’d been trained to hear that. He’d also been trained not to move in the sight of danger, and to ignore all the elements that made his heart race. He’d read the man’s file. He knew what he could do. But if he chose to do it there wasn’t a damn thing he could do to stop it, so what was the point in flinching?

When the noise muted around him, Murad’s heart lurched in his chest. And then he remembered the other, younger, more impressionable men around him. He raised his hand to execute a symbol—halt, don’t move. And they didn’t. Murad reminded himself to buy the whole group a round of drinks later, whether or not it would make him broke. Young, yes, worried, yes, but also fucking well trained.

“Guess you might not count killing him as meeting him,” he said, and his voice was steady. “Can you turn the noise back on now, Vels? I just meant that you shouldn’t make a scene.” He’d had a friend in hostage negotiations who had taught him some tricks. He figured that, based on every other way Vels was cooperating, he’d meant it in a…helpful way. If that was at all possible.

His placating look vanished, however, as Omri stepped between them. “Sir, I’m going to need you to back up. You’re not on my list today but if you interfere I am gonna have to bring you in. We just want him.” He jerked his chin at Vels. “I’m not threatening, I’m just telling you what’s gonna happen. He’s gonna come in, be booked, and if he’s found guilty…then we’ll talk.” He stared Omri down, trying to be intimidating even when the other man had inches of height on him. “Now move.”

Vels and Omri always called Omri different words when they said what his job was. Omri seemed to say "driver" to strangers, who often assumed that he chauffeured some rich, important man from one location to another. (Or that he drove taxis.) It was the profession of a normal man who was well on his way to six feet tall and had the fight reflex of a washcloth.

Vels, on the other hand, always called him a "body guard". He used the phrase because it sounded amazing. He imagined people he knew who had body guards -- city counselors, music performers, movie stars. That was the kind of thing that Vels had always wanted to be, and so when Omri's six-foot-four frame ended up between he and Murad he nearly jumped for joy.

Grinning he nodded and the noise came back. "Sorry sorry sorry. People always say things they don't mean. Like -- did you know that 'popping a cap' has nothing to do with bottles?" He had already forgotten that they were not on good terms -- or maybe, he was just unconvinced by it. "Omri. It's alright. Murad and I are friends. You don't have to worry about him."

There was nothing threatening in his voice except for the sound of how sure he was at what he was saying (and the looming knowledge that he was a T1). "Just come by and pick me up at..." He looked at his wrist where his holo resided, then at Murad, and then at Omri as if they were setting up a dinner date. "Maybe come pick me up around four? Oh oh oh! We can go get drinks at Dawson's after." He chimed. After what was not entirely clear -- after he'd been booked for first degree murder?

Then turned to Murad, "Do your guys want to come? Or are they squares? They kind of look like squares. I read somewhere that being a cop was one of the most rewarding jobs. Number 7. It was after "gardener" and before 'Veterinarian,' which is kind of weird. You'd think people who work with flowers all day would get bored. Flowers can't talk." His hands tucked into his pockets, still not moving towards Murad. (He really didn't seem to fully understand he was being arrested despite agreeing to come quietly assuming they'd be done by four.)

His shoulders tightened, fists clenching at his sides as he stared wordlessly back down at Murad. While he hadn’t quite worked his way to speech yet, his glowering stare spoke volumes about his distaste for this situation--and his willingness to correct it. “No Detective, I don’t think I will.” The words were respectful enough, sort of, but there was an strange note to his tone that made it clear he might as well have given Murad a giant “fuck you.”

And then Vels was there, telling him to stand down. Telling him not to worry. Omri looked over his shoulder at his friend--his so very, very crazy friend--with a pained expression. Vels was still grinning away, still going along with it, like it was all some kind of game. Did he even really understand what was happening? What he was being accused of? Or did he think the Cartel’s reach was long enough to protect him from even this? Perhaps it was, but that didn’t make Omri any less nervous.

”I...don’t think that’s wise, sir.” He said finally, still not moving. It was a rare thing for him to disobey a direct order from Vels. Perhaps the fact that he was dragging his feet would finally clue his boss in to the severity of their current predicament.

Murad’s smile was very, very thin as the noise returned. He couldn’t tell if the man was messing with him or not. Previous experience with the man indicated no, but that grin was unnerving. He remained stone-faced as the man started talking to Omri about when he was leaving. “Sir, you won’t be leaving tonight,” he said. “With the evidence we have, we can hold you for some time—and charge you. I suggest you plan accordingly. Please, sir, take your hands out of your pockets.”

He refused to let Omri make him nervous, even as the man towered in front of him, blocking Vels from him. Instead, he stared the man—up? “Sir, I can arrest you too,” he said in his flattest voice. Murad could bluff, but he wasn’t doing it here. He could recognize the quiet fuck you from the man, and he was going to make sure the man knew he registered it.

“You can both also get tagged for resisting arrest and obstructing justice,” he added. “It’s up to you. But I assure you, coming quietly is gonna work a hell of a lot better for both of you. Mr. Kruger, your buddy won’t go to jail. And as for you—Omri, was it?—you can work on finding your friend a good lawyer.” His smile was humorless. “He’s gonna need one. Now, I really suggest you move. My guys are getting jumpy and they’re not in the mood to listen to me. So. Move. Now.”

Things were starting to sink in. The way that Vels' expression started to turn downward showed that he was slowly catching on that this was real. That he was being arrested for something he didn't do. That didn't sit well with him.

He pulled his hands out of his pockets. "Omri. C'mon. Murad's a good guy -- sorry, sorry, sorry. Detective Hassan." His eyes sparkled as he stepped forward, touching Omri's shoulder as he moved around him. "If he wants to take in an innocent man, let him. He's just doing his job."

There was still nothing about him that seemed worried even the least bit. "I'm not resisting." he clarified as if they were having a normal discussion about the weather. "I mean -- oh! Do you have hand cuffs? My friend has cuffs that are pink. But I don't like pink. Maybe..." He looked down at his attire, "Black would look nice. You should color code them!" He suggested looking from Murad to Omri.

"Just talk to our friend for me, alright? He'll know what to do. And then pick me up tomorrow." The gravity of Omri's voice had made him realize it was serious enough that he wouldn't be released today. But tomorrow?

They'd have everything sorted out by tomorrow. He was sure. He was innocent. And the law was just and people didn't go to jail when they were innocent.

"You should take my gun." He chimed. "Cops in TV shows always get antsy about guns and they shoot people and I don't want to get shot." he said simply enough. That was a goal most people had. "You want to grab it?" he asked. "Oh wait..." he frowned. "I need to call my girlfriend. We are getting together tomorrow morning. Just hold on a second." He turned to Omri again, arms still held out towards Murad. "Where'd I put my phone?"

@Omri Kim @Murad Hassan | Sorry for the delay guys! For some reason I thought that the order was the other way around. WHOOPS. (Also, feel free to shove Vels against a wall or cuff him or whatever. He's cooperating. He's just also distracted.)

Omri glowered back down at Murad, fingers flexing nervously at his sides as his eyes flicked back up towards the rest of Murad’s little crew. Several nervous cops with guns against one him didn’t exactly sound like favorable odds. Even so, his mind raced as he attempted to come up with a plan of attack that didn’t end with him full of holes. There wasn’t one.

It was about then that Vels stepped around him, placing a restraining hand on his shoulder. Omri’s furious expression immediately shifted towards very real concern as Vels moved towards Murad, hands safely out of his pockets, and babbled about which color handcuffs he’d prefer and how Omri should talk to their friend.

Their friend. He could only mean Peter. Omri swallowed, then nodded. Yes, of course. Peter would know what to do. The man owed Vels more than a few favors. He could throw a little of his weight around, get him out in no time right? Yes, of course he would… Vels still didn't quite seem to understand what was happening--but maybe that was for the best. No point in upsetting him. Peter would settle this matter quickly enough.

“I....don’t believe you’re allowed a phone there, sir.” He explained helpfully, forcing a smile to his face, a lightness to his tone, as though nothing out of the ordinary was occurring. ”Don't worry, I'll pick her up some flowers from you. And I'll be by to get you as soon as our friend settles things."

Murad’s lips pulled back in what might’ve been a smile but what looked more like a rictus grin. The man was so aggravatingly—insistent on his innocence. They had him on fucking tape. And okay, yeah, something felt off about this, but it was hard to argue with freaking video evidence.

“I don’t. color code. My cuffs.” It was bitten out. Murad considered himself to be a patient man, but everyone had his limits, and he was rapidly approaching his as he brought out the cuffs. He did not make a snarky remark about would silver do your highness? After all, he was a mature, responsible, and just-over-suspension cop who couldn’t afford to get into trouble right now. “Turn around, hands behind your back,” he said instead. That was safer, and he wouldn’t have to worry about one of the lackies behind him reporting something bad back to the captain. Who was this friend they were talking about anyways? From the look they exchanged, and the way Omri looked nervous, this friend might not have been the best person to ask about.

But at least Omri was out of the way now.

“Gun?” his voice was unusually sharp. The other cops had lifted their guns again quite quickly. “Where?” He looked at Omri, then at Vels. “Tell us where, now.”
