The ability, to manipulate the strong nuclear force that holds atoms together. This has a number of uses, including the ability to manipulate atomic structure, removing the force binding the atom together (causing it to fall apart with disastrous effects) and changing matter by altering the structure of the atoms that make it up.

The puppy would be good for him.

He thought it would be anyway, the little animal that had whimpered at him, taken a shit on his carpet and then pissed up a wall when he wasn’t looking. The puppy would learn to behave at some point he imagined. He lifted its little shivering form upwards and pressed it against his chest blowing on its head and stroking it for a moment before setting it back down. His dull expression and vacant eyes warm as the little blue-black dog scampered off bouncing on its paws like a children’s toy unable to contain its glee at the new sight of snow.

Benedict watched the dog his hands shoved in the pockets of his outdoor coat. His jeans a little loose about his legs and his broad frame curled inwards, almost like a spider caught in water. He pursed his mouth as his eyes followed the dog and the cold wind brushed over his face. He had shaved a few days ago, he thought, maybe, or was it yesterday? He squeezed his eyes shut and sought out clarity to make an arbitration. Finding it and deciding it must have been yesterday he scratched at his stubble and turned his eyes back to the small animal running close by.

“Y’wan’ your ball?” He said as the dog marched back and stared up at him. “Y’gotta sit down first Polk.” He said raising his hand. “Sit.” He commanded his eyes narrowing.

The animal collapsed onto its haunches.

“Tha’s a good dog Polk.” he said and retrieved the ball from his pocket. Dogs liked balls. Or at least they did on TV. Polk seemed to like this one. “Go geddit boy.” Benedict said and threw the ball a few metres away. The dog pounced after the ball running towards it on bandy legs and then returning to the man who stood there, a dark figure silhouetted by the whiteness of the snow. He sniffed and shivered a little before reaching down and gesturing with his hand. “Gimme the ball Polk. C’mon now.” He said. His head swam with the motion and he grit his teeth hard to keep his balance. He sucked in another breath through those gritted teeth and drew the ball out of the dog’s mouth before throwing it a little further.

Hands fell to his hips as he struggled to keep his balance his fingers splayed and his eyes clenched as shut as his mouth. He must have missed a dose. Righting himself fully Benedict reached into his pocket and drew out a little capsule full of white pills. With trembling fingers Benedict pulled at the capsule’s top and pulling it away he rattled two pills onto his hand and threw them back into his mouth, swallowing them down with closed eyes he breathed a sigh of relief through his nose.

He opened them again as the dull feeling of lazy contentedness resumed its blanketing effect on his psyche. He watched Polk come running back towards him and his face cracked into a gentle, almost bewildered smile. “Hey.” He said reaching out and scooping the dog back up into his arms. “S’pretty cold out t’day ain’ it?” The dog shivered in his arms as he pressed it a little closer. “Y’need t’run roun’ s’more though before we go home.” He said and set the puppy back down and letting it scamper off sniffing and kicking up little puffs of the powdery snow.

Benedict rubbed at his temple and watched his dog, his mouth dropping open a little.

The wind didn’t seem quite so cold anymore

Focused in soundwaves creation and manipulation, Vels can make sounds loud enough to break glass or even bones, or he can make perfect silence. He can hear every conversation in the city at every moment of every day (but he's gotten damn good at finding the ones that matter). His suppressants push his abilities down to a 100 yard diameter, so ... that's better, right?

Vels was having a crummy day, though perhaps for someone else it would have been a good one. Someone had asked him to go find some scum bag who they thought worked for the Entente, which was great. Instead, he found some kid about as high as a kite, and he really didn't want to kill a kid today, so he had let him go.

Anyway, that was yesterday. Apparently Peter had gotten wind of it and had called him in to yell at him about how he wasn't top rung and couldn't make his own choices, so he was 'suspended' -- or whatever someone wanted to call it when the Gomorrah Cartel cut you off for a few days because the Godfather had lost his temper.

Today Vels had gone to the DEA to pick up something else because he was bored and instead of helping, they gave him some paper work, which he handed off to the man who had once been his partner and stormed out. He'd managed to catch the SkyRail back to Evendale, so he was walking the few blocks back to his apartment. He wore a coat that was too heavy for the weather and gloves that should have been in use about a hundred miles north or their latitude.

Regardless, he paused when he saw the guy leaning over. He had a scraggly beard and was shivering and didn't look stable on his feet, and then he watched him pop a few pills and hug the puppy. Vels dug around in his pocket for something. "Hey..." he said slowly. "You alright?"

And there was nothing in his voice that implied even a fraction of the danger that Vels Kruger was walking into another person's life. "There's a coffee shop up the street, let me get you something."

Ben watched Polk with his dazed eyes. He closed his mouth, realising it must have fallen open as he watched the animal trot about in the snow. He threw the ball again and smiled. The cold wasn’t so cold, the wind wasn’t so cutting and he felt peaceful again. Peaceful as his dog running about in the snow that was so bright to his eyes that it almost seemed to glisten. He shuffled his shoulders a little and blinked a few more times, letting the momentary burst of calm radiate through his body. Benedict reached down for the ball once more his fingers trembled for a moment longer than the temperature argued for. With a hardening of his features he straightened them taking the ball from Polk’s mouth and rubbing it against his jeans leg he threw it again.

The voice surprised him. He turned his head, his eyes rolling a little slower than would be normal but not so slow as to be stupefied. “Hey.” Benedict said, repeating the greeting. His mouth felt mealy as if he had been chewing wool. The man asked if he was doing alright. Benedict’s eyebrows shifted for a moment his eyes moving again but not his neck or his head, to fix on the man’s face. He had no idea who the other guy was, maybe he should, what if this was someone who was supposed to be watching him? His eyes flicked around again. “Polk.” He said calling the dog back to him. The animal returned clutching its ball and eyeing the stranger, much with the same cautious bewilderment as its master. “Don’ worry boy.” Benedict said reaching down and picking the small animal up. “Gets antsy roun’ strangers y’see.” Benedict said, stroking the dog.

“Y’wanna see my ID card or sommat?” He said one arming the puppy and reaching into his pocket. Taking it out he offered it to the man. It gave his name, his details, his tier and power. Benedict seemed despite his size to be tentative. “I don’ know if I have t’tell someone if I’m a dog owner or something. But I work for the DEA so I can get that done soon.” He said and his lips pursed with just a moment of worry. The offer of coffee had fluttered off with the wind as worry had spread through Benedict’s body the same way the calmness had beforehand. He didn’t want to get in any more trouble at work, knowing and not knowing regulations tended to get you in trouble.

Things tended to get bad for Benedict when he got in trouble. He tended to get the shortest end of the shortest stick and it hadn’t yet quite occurred to him that someone had asked him to get coffee just for the sake of it. Nobody ever just did that.

There were a great many things that made Vels Kruger excited. Most of them revolved around the girl of his dreams, this one did not (which was convenient and logical given who he was conversing with). The answer was 'no' he did not want to see the ID, but when someone held their ID out -- who wasn't going to take it?

This was almost exactly what Vels said as he reached out for the card, eyes looking over it before a grin wrapped around his face and then it almost seemed to reverberate through his entire body. He'd met another T1 before in the field -- though it was of course incredibly rare, as they weren't a huge part of the population (and the danger of two T1's forming a bond and turning against the city wasn't something anyone wanted to witness).

So as he looked over the ID, flipping it over for all the details on the man's power, he said: "No, no. I don't need to see your ID card. I just figured guy out with his puppy, playing in the snow -- might need something to warm them up." He didn't say it out loud, but Vels had assumed he was homeless. (The fairness of that assumption aside.)

He has seemed to not even heard the statement about the dog until he was done looking at the card. He moved forward -- it might have been intimidating if it wasn't bubbling with child-like excitement. "I'm a T1 too!" he chimed. "Sound manipulation. Here. You want to see how it works?" He didn't wait for an answer. In fact -- when he spoke, he didn't seem to stop or let Ben get a word in edgewise. Questions all seemed rhetorical.

He pointed to two people walking down the street a bit away from them and then tucked his hands in his pockets. For a moment, it didn't seem to be anything at all, and then suddenly Benedict would hear the conversation of the two other people as if they were standing in front of him.

His face cracked into a giant smile and he almost danced with excitement. "You hear it?" he asked, bubbling with excitement. "Isn't that cool? What can you do?" he then he paused, waiting expectantly. If he'd been the same species as Polk instead of Benedict, his tail might have been going a mile a minute.
