Larissa had not been pleased when her APD handler had shown up two nights ago at Noc. The jackass made a point to come on a fucking Friday night, knowing the place would be packed, knowing Larissa would be busy. He even showed up looking like a cop, cheap suit and all. She’d dragged him quickly to the elevators, letting the doors close before she hit the emergency stop.

Only one of her handlers had been to her apartment, and this jerk wasn’t the one.

“DEA is taking over that investigation regarding the Supplement smuggling.” He said, grinning at her obvious annoyance.
“I thought that was Elena’s case?”
“It’s DEA’s now.”
“And you came all the way down here to tell me this why?”
“Because you’re going to DEA and you’re going to help them.”
“The fuck I am. DEA didn’t arrest me, you people did. I made a deal with you, not with those devils.”
“You’ll go. And you’ll cooperate fully for whatever they need. You cultivated the contacts in TU and at the docks. And if you give them any trouble, well, our agreement might change in a way that you won’t like.”

The rest of the conversation really didn’t matter, merely a back and forth of thinly veiled insults. She didn’t like him and he didn’t like her. The main points that came of it was, yes, she’d go work for DEA as a CI--this one time (though history taught Larissa that once law enforcement got their teeth in you, they were hard to shake off)--but she refused to go down to the DEA headquarters. A compromise had been made that she’d meet her new DEA handler at the Satori Memorial Library in two days.

And so here she was, sitting in one of the back tables, leaning back in one of the blocky wooden chairs with her black boots propped up on the table. A library assistant had tried to ask her to put her feet down but she’d just retorted with “I’m being quiet aren’t I? Isn’t that like the only rule around here?”

As she waited she read, an old historical fiction novel on the early princes of Ireland and the land and political wars between the ruling family houses and the King of England. Reminded her a bit of the criminal families and the Cartel in Ark.

Seems it didn’t matter if you had the whole world at your fingertips or if you were stuck inside a giant Dome, people would always fight and kill over power.

"Is it a good read? Personally I prefer Greek and Roman fiction. Much more dramatic." Elias grinned as he moved to pull a seat out from the table, smoothing out his clothing as he sat down.

"Larissa Parrish, I hope. Or else this would be an awkward conversation." Elias of course recognized her from the file the APD had transferred to him when his superiors had assigned him the case. A criminal informant with root deep in the underground, with the capability of expanding within a moment's notice.

A former drug addict, she managed to kick her addiction and gain the means to open her own nightclub, Noc. He heard of it, but it wasn't exactly the kind of place a DEA Operative should frequent in his down time.

There were some gaps in her file, but they likely didn't mean much, since she was technically still involved in illegal practices. Hopefully that wouldn't be much of a problem.

She was standoffish, and her annoyance at was clear. She likely didn't trust him. Maybe he made her nervous. He hoped to quell any friction all the same, since she'd be extremely helpful in the case.

"Operative Elias Delrose. Though, feel free to call me Del. Most people do."
He held out his hand to shake, his way of testing the waters a bit, see if she was at least willing to try being amiable.

Larissa didn’t look up as Elias spoke and took a seat at the table though she could feel his eye on her, no doubt judging her, sizing her up, deciding how or what she would be in terms of usefulness to him. Cops were always the same. “It’s not bad. Personally I prefer to be left alone when I’m reading,” she flipped a page lazily as he introduced himself. Did he think they could bond over reading materials?

A flicker of a smirk tugged at her lips. Operative. Ooohh, how official. Was he trying to intimidate her? Let her know who was boss? And then he was there, done talking and with his hand outstretched to her as if this were a proper business meeting and she had any choice in being here. As if they were friends. She waited a beat longer, testing his patience. Every new handler went through this with her, she’d test just how long of a leash they were willing to give.

Finally, she swung her legs off the table, boots planted firmly on the ground and she turned to look at him. Unabashedly her gaze swept him from head to toe making her own judgements and assessment.

“Well, Elias,” she said, intentionally not calling him Del, “I think you’ll find I’m not like most people,” she said closing the book without any care to marking the page she’d been on. “Why is DEA taking this case from APD?” Her handler had mentioned something about Suppressant OD’s but she wanted to hear it from Elias. Plus there was the bonus of her questioning him, like she was in charge.

A small grin slipped across his face. A bit of snark. This wasn't his first time dealing with a less than friendly CI, so he was used to it. It didn't bother him,
in fact, he was a bit amused.

"Agreed. A bit of solitude while enjoying some mythology never hurts." He had kept his hand open, seeing if she would accept it. After a few moments, he withdrew it quickly.

"Well, that was a bit awkward." he said, letting out a small chuckle. "Not the best way to start a case co-op.' Humor was always a good way to break the ice, he found. Whether they laughed or not, it always seemed to lower guards and ease others.

He watched as she took her feet from the table, which had purposely neglected to mention, and gave him a once over. "Do I have a smudge somewhere?" He looked down to inspect his clothing, and, finding nothing, looked back up at her, as she moved the subject to the case.

"The DEA is concerned about several cases of death from overdosing on Suppressant, within Evendale." He pulled out his personal tablet, opening the relevant files before showing it to her.

"In each case in question, a autopsy found the victims had died after first time use."

“Co-op? What are we? Partners?” No one had ever treated her like a partner. Not even Elena. And they shouldn’t. She wasn’t a cop. Hell, she wasn’t even a proper undercover agent, though she did do occasional undercover work as needed to get her information. But the man was trying and Larissa could begrudge him that even if she didn’t trust him. He could have come here and barked orders and muscled her into submission. Seemed he was trying the “kill them with kindness” technique.

She smirked, staring at him in a way that would unnerve some people. “Not at all, you look just fine.” And he was good looking, for a fed.

Larissa leaned forward, spinning the tablet around so she could look it over, not bothering to ask as she began to flip through the file screen.

“It only takes one time.” She muttered absently as she peered at the autopsy report. It was the tone of someone who knew that fact the hard way. And though technically, one time could be all it took, overdoses like this weren’t common after just a single dose. Most users weren’t trying to kill themselves and most dealers weren’t trying to thin out their customer base. So it was interesting and unusual.

Glancing up briefly from the tablet, she asked, “before we get to far into this, what are you?” It was bluntly asked though there was no really polite way to ask someone if they were Typic or Evo and if an Evo what their powers were. At least she hadn’t demanded he whip out his ID card. But she had to know. Malachi forbid he have some kind of power that allowed him to read minds, or tell when there were other Evos around.

Her eyes had dropped back down to the tablet, as if his answer wasn’t as important to her as it was, brows furrowing as she took in the addresses where each of the bodies had been found. False Dawn, there was no surprise there. One a few blocks from the ECLU, a message maybe? And one in the alleys behind Omni-Stadium.

"I hope so, unless I botched the meetup and you despise me. Which, for the record, happens more often than I'd like." As she look over the tablet, he took a moment to look around. The library was mostly empty, which didn't surprise him much. It was far from exciting and to honest, had a drab interior.

Turning back towards her, he caught her stare, replying to it with a quick glance to either side of him, wondering what she was looking at. He had to admit, she did have a way of testing a person. It was rare for him not to have a comeback, but in this instance, she had him in check. All he could do was simply not and wait for her to check files, while trying not to stare back.

He began taking mental notes of her expression as she read. Not distraught. He'd thought she'd be more unnerved by a case like this, considering her own past.
Maybe she was one of the ones who attempted to get powers from it, and simply got hooked after it didn't work? He'd seen it before. Or maybe she'd tried any and everything, and Suppressant was her final lead.

Whatever the case, these were thoughts for later. He'd need to focus on the present. "Hmm?" Her voice brought him out of his own mind.

"I've been told I'm human, at the very least." A small grin slide across his face,
as he leaned forward, crossing his arms. "Kidding. I'm a Evolute. A Tier 1 at that."
He let the revelation sit in the air for a bit. "And a Telepath to boot. You, Ms.
Parrish, have quiet the secret." The grin had disappeared from his face, a look of seriousness replacing it.

Odd as it was, Larissa had not turned to Suppressant in order to get powers, it had never even occurred to her to do so. Her family had been mixed, Evos and Typics and Carriers and so none of those had seemed out of place or wrong and they'd all been loved and happy together. Other than wanting to be more like her older brother, she'd never had a reason to want for powers.

She’d used Suppressant as a way to keep up with those that did have powers. Competitiveness and stubbornness had been her downfall. It was the fact she’d OD’ed as a Jane Doe that helped her keep her secret, that and a little help from the Entente in getting rid of the video evidence of her accidentally killing that nurse. No one knew she’d OD’ed unless she told them and therefore, despite her record with drugs and arrests, no one had any reason to think she was an Evolute. The orange ID card in her wallet only solidified her standing as a Typic citizen.

Perfectly harmless, minus the knives she kept on her.

His glib reply pulled her attention from the holo file again and Larissa glanced up with the barest roll of her eyes though his words did merit a small, genuine smile. It was the kind of sarcastic comment she probably would have given to the question. But the smile didn’t last.

A T1.

In the beat that hung in the air as he let that information sink in all manner of powers flashed through Larissa’s mind. What could he do?

And then he said it and she couldn’t help the sharp intake of breath. “Oh.” It was a quiet expression, as if she couldn’t believe it was ending this way. All these years and a fucking telepath in the middle of a fucking library was going to out her greatest secret.

Her eyes dropped, though she wasn’t looking at his holo or her book now. “So you know…”

She let that hang in the air for the same amount of time he had before she forced herself to look up and straight into his eyes.

“You know my dark secret now……….that all I’ve wanted to do since you walked in was push you up against one of these bookshelves and fuck your brains out?” She couldn’t even get the whole ridiculous statement out before she was smirking at him.

Puhlease. If she was that easy to rattle, she’d make a pisspoor CI and an even worse businesswoman. And given Noc’s success, the latter was hardly the case. If he truly had telepathy, he wouldn’t have been leaning on the table so casually as he talked to her, watching as she read over the case file. He would have been on his feet, Suppressant gun out and aimed directly at her, yelling at her to surrender.

Because she was dangerous.

“It’s only been in Evendale then? These overdoses?” And just like that, quick enough for a whiplash, she was all business and back onto the details of the case.

A smile! It was working, slowly but surely. She was warming up to him,
at least. He allowed himself to grin internally, since he didn't want to compromise the straight-faced facade he was currently attempting to put on.

It wasn't that far of a stretch, to be completely honest. DEA Operatives are required to be at least Tier 2, and a Telepath would be extremely useful when working with a CI, for a number of reasons. And it seemed she had taken it to heart, judging by her reaction. He'd let the moment last maybe a minute more, before he revealed-

Wait. What? A sound that sounded like a mix of coughing and gasping came from his mouth, as he tried to compose himself. He had not expected that answer.
It was only after looking back at her and seeing the smirk that he realized his own joke had been turned against him. Hmm. That was twice he'd been left without a reply.

She wasn't like most people, that much was true. "Ahem.." he cleared his throat a bit, hoping to regain at least some of his pride, "the, ah, overdoses? Right. Cases matching the criteria for our investigation have only occurred in Evendale, yes."She was toying with him. Huh, so that's what it felt like.

"As I said, each victim had no history of drug-related issues, and died from an initial overdose."

There was no doubt the glee Larissa seemed to take in unsettling Del and keeping him off his game. You didn’t need to be a behavioral specialist to know she was very much enjoying toying with him. And yes, though she wouldn’t admit it, she was relaxing around him. He wasn’t treating her like a tool or an inferior and for now she was content enough to work with him with only minor pushback and sass.

No history of drug issues? Now that was just as interesting as all of these overdoses happening in Evendale. She would have expected bad batches of Suppressant to hit Jacks first where those supplies often got cut with other chemicals and drugs to dilute them. Addicts in the Jacks were poor and desperate. They’d take anything. Evendale was a nicer district, more money. These were recreational users. People like she’d been, using the drugs because they thought it would help their focus, or for the occasional party to feel like rebels. They thought they could control the habit. That they wouldn’t end up like the druggies on the streets. Foolish.

“Anything else that connects them besides Evendale? And I’m assuming they’re all Typics…speaking of, Mr. Not Actually A Telepath, are you going to answer that question for me?” Larissa couldn’t see why an Evo would take more Suppressant than allotted by the government and how they would ever overdose. Certainly Evo’s weren’t out there getting street Suppressant? It didn’t have the same high for them as it did for Typics.

Unless.

“Do you think these were hits? Murders made to look like OD’s?”

And what exactly was he asking her to do here? Go back under with TU? Get back in the with the dealers? Find out where these people had bought their drugs?

"No connections that we've found. Each victim had a relatively clean record,
no charges or felonies." It was strange. They hadn't found any enemies, no one with the motive or grudge against them. Not even signs of foul play.

"Oh, right. I'm a Tier 2. I'm capable of controlling vibrations." He shrugged lightly.
"Its more versatile than you'd think." He'd learned several tricks during his tests at Carrie, and even more after over a decade of practice.

"So, having no connections, and no source, that brings us to you. Your connections to the underworld are extensive, meaning you can do things the APD or the DEA can't, go places we can't." He pulled back the tablet, closing the files. "We need to start from the bottom, with dealers, and work our way up to a Supplier. They'll be able to give us at least a customer list."

Larissa arched a brow. “Controlling vibrations?” She repeated, giving Del another sweeping once over with her gaze. “Oh, I can think of quite a few places where that could be useful.” She said in a low, sultry tone not quite appropriate for a public library. Maybe this handler would be more fun than she thought.

Of course. Her connections. That was such a nice, polite way of saying, “hey, you were once an addict and knee deep in the scum of Ark, wanna help us out?” But something he’d said caught her interest.

“Do things APD and DEA can’t? Is that carte blanche to do whatever I need to in order to get you guys to the bottom of this?” Finding leads would be a lot easier if she didn’t have to worry about blurring the lines between legal and illegal.

Of course, going into the depths he described, following the chain all the way up, was a hell of a lot more to ask than what Elena had in sending her into TU to find a contact for the smuggling. If she was going to get dealers and suppliers to talk to her, to trust her, she’d be around a lot of drug use. Maybe even asked to use herself to show good faith that she wasn’t working for the police.

“Do I get to consider that my Queen for the Case letter, Elias?” She knew prosecutors often granted was was known as a “Queen for the Day” letter to people in custody. Basically a get out of jail free card from any incriminating evidence as long as they gave up what they knew. You only got one of those if you weren’t the biggest fish in the pond that the feds were fishing in.

At the same time, she thought it would be bold of Del to give her that much leeway. He didn’t know her. That could backfire in his face so quickly.

By now he was catching onto her game. She enjoyed seeing the reactions she could get out of him. It seemed like she and him had similar senses of humor.
The ways they went about getting that reaction may have been different, but the parallels could be drawn. He offered a knowing look, before moving on.

"Technically, yes. You are a CI, and we recognize that you wouldn't be a very effective one if you were held to the same code of conduct that our Operatives are." He was no rookie. He had been on several cases which required the graying of morality and blindness to the law. It bothered him a bit, but in the end, it was necessary to cut the head off the dragon, so to speak.

"I know the kind of work that's required of you. And I have at least some understanding of the situations you'll be in." Once or twice he'd had to go undercover, once within a weapons smuggling ring, and another within a Dodgers group. He didn't look fondly on either experience.

"I'll allow what's necessary." He stressed the word, knowing she knew what he meant. No killing, if it can be avoided. No pocketing money or drugs. "As your Handler, everything you do, eventually falls back to me. So I'll take the heat,
I'll explain the situation to the higher ups, I'll write the reports." He wasn't trying to take less work, or ease his way out, he just needed her to know that, with so much freedom, if she were to do something that jumped from morally gray to red and black, he'd burn first.

"Any more questions? Just about time for a lunch break, I think."

“If only all my handlers were as so open-minded.” She remarked dryly. Larissa had thought it obvious that she wouldn’t be able to do her job if she were constricted by the same rules and regulations as the detectives and agents she worked for but so many of them insisted on putting unreasonable limitations on her. Like they thought these cases could be solved without muddying the waters at all. Please. The criminal element were not stupid…not the real ones. Sure, any old beat cop could catch a street level thug with basic intuition and detective work, those criminals were stupid. It was why they got caught. But the big fish? No. They’d been doing it far too long. If you wanted the big catches you had to play their game, get someone inside, get their trust.

“Oh? You know the situations I’ll be in?” She cooed, arching a brow, tone very much doubting that he understood her situation even a little bit. “Why, Elias, does that mean you’ve got those hands of your dirty?” Larissa teased giving him a wicked smile.

And there was the leash tug. ’I’ll allow what’s necessary’ But he’d be the one deciding what was necessary considering she didn’t think she could convince him that sometimes killing someone was necessary. Telling her that he’d take the heat was also a dangerous move, he was trusting her not to burn his ass on purpose.

“A library is not exactly a good place for lunch,” she said sarcastically. “Unless you plan on making a meal out of items you can buy out of the vending machine.” She sighed, expecting to be dismissed—run along little doggy until we call for you again. “No, no more questions. I’ll start asking around, figure out where these poor saps got their drugs and work from there.” Right now would be info gathering, she wouldn’t need to go deep undercover until she had a better idea who was doing this and why.

"Its certainly a rare trait. Go on. Compliments do go a certain degree with me." he grinned. In the back of his mind, he was already running through warrants and documents he'd need to conduct this type of operation. He may have been assigned handler, but any action he took still had to be approved by the DEA.

"This isn't my first assignment, you know." He began packing away his tablet, and signing. He'd need to give a assessment of Parrish to his superiors when he returned to the office. Anything that could postpone that 3 hour session was welcome.

"I wasn't planning on having it here, y'know, unless you like vending machine food. There's actually a sub shop down the street. My treat." he shrugged, "A 'welcome to my world'." He grinned.

“Noted.” She said with a smirk. Seemed like flattery would get her everywhere with this one. It had worked pretty well with Elena too, at least sometimes. “I should hope not, if it were and your bosses stuck you with me then I would hazard a guess that they don’t like you and were trying to get you to quit.”

Even APD knew not to give her to a rookie, she’d chew them up and spit them out. DEA would know better too. She was already standing, ready to leave when he surprised her by offering to buy her lunch.

Larissa paused and looked him over a bit warily as if by asking her to lunch he was setting her up for something. “Hmm,” she said lips pursed. “Yeah, your world.” As if that were exactly where she wanted to be, a puppet for the feds. If she’d wanted to work for DEA she would have marched herself down to DEA headquarters and announced herself as an Evolute.

She didn’t know exactly what tier they’d consider her at but she was fairly certain given the scope of her powers, a career at DEA or a lifetime in prison would have been her only options, both coming with monthly doses of Suppressant.

“Alright Elias, you can treat me to lunch.” She agreed finally with a teasing little smirk, still refusing to call him Del solely on principle and to dig at him.
